Beavers Win Game One Over Vikings

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Oregon State softball team split a doubleheader with Portland State Tuesday evening in Hillsboro, Ore.
The Beavers began the afternoon by beating the Vikings 2-1 in the opening game of the day.
Freshman Rainey Dyreson pitched all seven innings of game one, allowing just a single earned run while striking out a career-high seven batters.
Junior Mikela Manewa tallied two hits and an RBI, while fellow junior Sammi Noland notched a double and an RBI.
The Beavers looked like they might get on the board in the first inning of game one, when Manewa, junior Dani Gilmore and redshirt-sophomore Natalie Hampton all reached to load the bases, but the runners were stranded.
Portland State would threaten in the third, when they put a pair on to start the inning. Manewa made a nice play to help Oregon State work out of the jam, starting a 4-3 double play for the first two outs of the frame. The Vikings drew first blood in the bottom of the fourth inning, however, when they hit a solo homer to take a 1-0 lead.
The Beavers would respond in the fifth inning. Junior CJ Chirichigno started things off when she was hit by a pitch. She would advance to second on a wild pitch, and then to third on a groundout, before Manewa ripped single up the middle to level the score at one apiece.
Oregon State would strike again in the following frame. Hampton started things off with a walk, and sophomore Amee Aarhus entered to pinch run at first. She would proceed to steal second, before Noland hammered a double down the left-field line to give the Beavers the lead 2-1.
Portland State would load the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Dyreson was able to work out of it to earn the win.
Oregon State threatened in the first inning of the second game, putting a pair of runners on base, but both players were stranded. Portland State would score five runs in the first two innings to take an early lead.
The Beavers put a runner in scoring position in the third, when Arriola reached second, but OSU could not bring her home.
Oregon State would get on the board in the fifth. Chirichigno started things off by smoking a double down the left-field line. She would advance to third on an error, before Manewa brought her home with a sac-fly that narrowly missed leaving the yard. Portland State would respond with four more runs to take the win, 9-1.
The Beavers return to Pac-12 play Saturday for their final home series of the season, as they get ready to go head-to-head with UCLA.
