Beavers Make Way to Pac-12 Tournament

THE GAME: The No. 8/9 Oregon State women’s basketball team (26-3, 16-2 Pac-12) heads to Seattle for the Pac-12 Tournament this week. After a first-round bye, the Beavers wil face the winner of Thursday’s game between USC and Colorado at 6 p.m. on Friday.

PAC-12 TITLE: The Beavers are looking to double-up on their Pac-12 titles this week, as they already locked down the regular season championship with their win over California on Saturday. The Pac-12 title is the first in Oregon State history, and the second conference title in school history, joining the 1982-83 NorPac champion squad. The Beavers have never finished higher than second in the Pac-12 Tournament.
RUECK NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR: Head Coach Scott Rueck was named the John R. Wooden Pac-12 Coach of the Year earlier this week. Rueck has helped engineer a Renaissance in the Oregon State women’s basketball program, building to the best season in school history this year, as the team set a school record with 26 wins and won the first Pac-12 title in school history. Rueck also earned Pac-12 Coach of the Year (Media) honors in 2012 and 2014 and was the WBCA Region 8 Coach of the Year last season. For his efforts, Rueck received a two-year contract extension in October, keeping him at Oregon State through the 2019-20 season.
ALL CONFERENCE HONORS: Oregon State has a trio of All-Pac-12 honorees this season, with Ruth Hamblin, Sydney Wiese and Jamie Weisner all earning all-conference plaudits. The three All-Pac-12 honors is the most in the conference and the most the Beavers have ever had in a single season. Hamblin also earned Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year honors, earning a spot on the All-Defensive team for the second year in a row.

WIESE HITS THREES: Tuesday’s All-Pac-12 honor was the latest in a long line of accolades for sophomore Sydney Wiese this season. The Phoenix, Ariz., native is one of 15 finalists for the Nancy Lieberman Award, which is given to the nation’s best point guard. Wiese, who is two weeks removed from Pac-12 Player of the Week honors, was also on the Naismith Award Mid-Season Watch List. Wiese became Oregon State’s all-time leader in career 3-pointers on Feb. 13, and has continued to build on her career total, moving up to 196 in her career. Wiese also set the Oregon State single-season record with 112 three-pointers last season. She will now set her sights on the Pac-12 3-pointers record of 295, held by Stanford’s Candice Wiggins.
VS. USC: Oregon State earned a sweep over the Women of Troy this season. The Beavers posted one of their better defensive performances against USC at Gill Coliseum in January, holding the Women of Troy to 35 points, the lowest total in program history. Weisner is averaging 18 points per game against USC and the Beavers have outrebounded the Women of Troy by an average of nine per game in their two meetings.
VS. COLORADO: The Beavers notched a 66-44 win over the Buffaloes on Feb. 20, their first win in Boulder in school history. Jamie Weisner put up a double-double in the contest, scoring 17 points to go with 10 rebounds. The teams entered the break tied at 26, before Oregon State went on to outscore Colorado 40-18 in the closing frame.
PAC-12 TOURNAMENT: The Beavers are looking for their first ever Pac-12 Tournament title this week. Oregon State made its first ever conference tournament final last season, falling to USC 71-63 in the championship game. The Beavers have reached the semifinals three times.
BOARD GAMES: The Beavers have shown their ability to crash the glass this season, sitting second in the nation in defensive rebounds and 15th in the country in rebounding margin. Deven Hunter and Ruth Hamblin are both in Oregon State’s top-10 for career rebounds. Hunter pulled down nine boards on Saturday to move within three of seventh with 658 in her career. Hamblin broke into the top-10 with 12 boards against Stanford, and has continued to build on her total from there, ending the weekend with 638.

A PAIR OF THOUSANDS: Weisner joined teammate Ali Gibson in the 1,000 point club earlier this season, making them the first teammates in OSU history with 1,000 career points since Hollye Chapman and Leilani Estavan in 2004.
MORE MILESTONES FOR GIBSON: Senior Ali Gibson is not only a member of the 1,000-point club, but one of Oregon State’s top-10 career scorers as well. Gibson currently sits seventh with 1,226 points. The senior has started all 128 games Oregon State has played over the last four seasons.

Hamblin, who was nicknamed the “Canadian Hammer” by former Oregon State men’s basketball player Joe Burton, set a Pac-12 single-season record for blocks with 141 last season. Hamblin had blocked at least one shot in 16-consecutive games prior ot Feb. 2’s game against UCLA. Hamblin blocked eight shots against Cal on Saturday, her 12th game this season with five or more blocks, and her fourth in OSU’s last seven games.
DUAL THREAT: Hamblin is a force in the classroom as well as on the court. The junior was named Capital One Academic All-America Second Team last week. Hamblin has mainitained a 3.86 GPA as a Mechanical Engineering major.

The Beavers hosted 7,652 spectators at Jan. 9’s Civil War, the third highest attendance total in school history, surpassing their total of 7,537 against Idaho in December. Thursday’s crowd of 6,157 was the Beavers’ fourth of over 5,000 this year. During Saturday’s game against California, sound on the floor was recorded as high as 109 decibels, roughly the same volume as a loud rock concert.

SO INTERNATIONAL: Five Oregon State players competed for their national teams this summer, traveling to different continents and continuing to build their games. She later made the 14-player practice squad for FIBA World Championships camp, but was not selected for the final 12-player roster. Gabriella Hanson played for the Swedish U-20 team at the FIBA Euro ‘A” Championships at Udine, Italy, in July. She averaged 9.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 30.3 minutes per game. Marie Gülich played for Germany’s U-20 team at the FIBA Euro ‘B’ Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, in July.
