Six Beavers Earn Pac-12 Academic Honors

CORVALLIS - Six members of the Oregon State women’s basketball team earned Pac-12 All-Academic honors, the conference office announced today. Junior Ruth Hamblin headlined the group, earning First Team All-Academic status for the second season in a row. Fellow junior Samantha Siegner and sophomore Sydney Wiese were both named to the second team, while juniors Jamie Weisner and Deven Hunter, and sophomore Gabriella Hanson all earned Honorable Mention.
Hamblin, who also received Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team recognition this season as a Mechanical Engineering major, was named Pac-12 Player of the Year by the conference’s media. The 6-foot-6 Canadian was a force for the Beavers at both ends of the floor this season, scoring 12.9 points per game, and pulling down 8.6 rebounds per contest. Her total of 122 blocks this season is good for seventh in the nation and first in the conference. Hamblin blocked more shots this season than seven Pac-12 teams, and notched 12 games with five or more rejections. Hamblin’s season was highlighted by a 31-point, 16-rebound performance against Washington State, as she shot 12-for-16 from the field and blocked seven shots. For her efforts, Hamblin was named All-Region by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association earlier this week.
Siegner was named to the Academic Second Team for the second time in her career. The junior averaged just over 15 minutes per contest this season while seeing significant minutes at three different positions over the course of the 2014-15 campaign. Overall, she averaged 3.2 points and 3.8 rebound per game, and came up with several big moments over the course of the season, including a late basket that helped the Beavers lock down a win over No. 12 Arizona State.
Wiese was named to the Academic Second Team in her first year eligible for academic honors. The sophomore point guard earned All-Pac-12 First Team honors this season, scoring 12.7 points per game and finishing the year second in the conference with 179 assists. Wiese shot 44.9 percent from the field, 41.8 percent from 3-point range, and led the Beavers with an average of 32.5 minutes per game.
Weisner and Hunter both were Honorable Mentions for the second time in their respective careers. Weisner earned All-Pac-12 honors after leading the team with 13.7 points per game. Hunter tallied 8.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per contest over the course of the season. Hanson earned Honorable Mention in her first season eligible for academic honors, after netting 6.7 points per game as the Beavers “sixth-woman”.
