Beavers, Murphy In The Hunt At Duck Invite

EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon State men’s golf team is tied for third place and sophomore Kevin Murphy is tied for second through Monday’s 36 holes of play in wet and windy conditions at the Duck Invitational.
The Beavers, who won the team title at this event last year, shot a 19-over 298-297--595 at the par-72, 7,020-yard Eugene Country Club to sit in a tie for third with San Diego State. Arizona State (3-over 579) and Washington (6-over 582) hold down the top two spots in the 16- team field with 18 holes to play.
The final round of the two-day, 54-hole tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
“The course was playing very difficult with the rain and wind,” Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. “One of the guys joked in the van that it played about 500 yards longer than it did during Saturday’s practice round.

“We’ve talked a lot about having great body language and not allowing poor shots to spiral into more. Today the guys did a great job of just grinding it out.”
Murphy is one of only five golfers in the 83-player field in red figures, after going 72-71 for a 1-under 143. He’s only one stroke behind Jon Rahm of Arizona State and tied with Max Rottluff of Arizona State, James Fahy of Gonzaga and Washington’s Jonathan Sanders.
A native of Rogue River, Ore., Murphy posted his best career finish at the Duck Invitational last year as a freshman when he finished in a tie for third place with an even-par 72-73-71--216.
“I walked all 36 holes with Kevin,” Reehoorn said. “After 18 holes I told Jonnie (Motomochi) I thought the course was playing easy because he made it look pretty easy. It’s fun to see him play with confidence. He will be ready for a great round tomorrow.”
