The job Kevin McGiven did last season at Utah State earned him one football publication’s national quarterbacks coach of the year honor.
The fact that the Aggies won the New Mexico Bowl and finished the year 10-4, the second-most wins in school history is impressive enough. Add that Coach McGiven and the staff accomplished that feat with three starting quarterbacks going out for the season is almost unbelievable.
Coach McGiven might have the least amount of experience on the staff coaching alongside head coach Gary Andersen, but the Beaver mentor has put the trust of revamping the quarterback position in his hands and with good reason.
The OSU video team mic’d up Coach McGiven at a recent practice to give Beaver Nation a taste of what it’s like being a quarterback in a new offense. A new offense that on Thursday saw freshmen Seth Collins toss a pass to the newest tight end on the roster, former quarterback Brent VanderVeen.
The Beavers return to the practice field for the final time Saturday before a two-week break. Fans are reminded that Saturday’s practice is open to the public if held at Reser Stadium. The 11:30 a.m. workout may be forced inside the Truax Center due to weather conditions which will make the practice closed due to space limitations.
OSU football is inviting any 3rd-8th grade boys and girls to the annual Boys and Girls Club of Corvallis Youth Football Mini-Camp this Saturday from 3-5 p.m. at the Merritt-Truax Indoor Facility on the OSU campus. To register or for more information please go to bgccorvallis.org/Athletics.
The response has been strong to the Coach Andersen hire as season ticket sales are pacing at a record rate for this time of the year as the excitement continues to build for the new era of Beaver football. The season officially kicks off Friday, Sept. 4 at Reser Stadium vs. Weber State in a nationally televised game.
