Murphy Posts Top-10 Finish In San Diego

CHULA VISTA, Calif. – Sophomore Kevin Murphy fired a 1-under 71 in the final round of the San Diego Classic on Tuesday to move eight spots up the leaderboard and finish in a tie for 10th place.
Murphy started on the 10th hole at the par-72, 7,033-yard San Diego Country Club and was 1 over through four before reeling off birdies on the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th holes to shoot a 3-under 33 going out. He had one birdie and three bogeys coming in to finish the day in red figures and conclude the two-day, 54-hole tournament with an even-par 73-72-71--216.
It’s the third top-10 finish of Murphy’s career after posting two during his freshman campaign. His best career finish is a tie for third place at last year’s Duck Invitational in Eugene.
As a team, the Beavers had their best round of the tournament on Tuesday, shooting a 6-over 294, to finish in ninth place in the 14-team field with a 28-over 300-298-294--892.
Washington won the team title with a 10-under 854 and a pair of Huskies, Cheng-Tsung Pan and Corey Pereira, shared medalist honors with an 8-under 208.
Senior Alex Franklin also played well in the final round, shooting a 1-over 73, to move nine spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 33rd place with a 7-over 75-75-73--223.
Junior Brian Jung finished in a tie for 44th with a 9-over 74-75-76--225, senior Scott Kim shot a 12-over 78-76-74--228 for sole 51st and sophomore Conner Kumpula concluded play in a tie for 72nd with a 19-over 78-80-77-235.
The Beavers have two weeks off before competing at the Duck Invitational in Eugene, Ore., on Monday, March 23 and Tuesday, March 24.
