Murphy Leads Beavers Through 36 Holes

CHULA VISTA, Calif. – Kevin Murphy shot rounds of 73-72 at the San Diego Classic on Monday to lead the Oregon State men’s golf team through 36 holes of the two-day, 54-hole event.
Murphy, a sophomore from Rogue River, Ore., had four birdies and five bogeys in the morning and follow that with three birdies and three bogeys in the afternoon at the par-72, 7,033-yard San Diego Country Club to put him a tie for 18th place with a 1-over 145.
“Kevin played so well today,” Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. “I walked all 36 holes with him and he did so many things well. He just needs to keep it going through the end of each round.”
Eleven players are under par after the first two rounds, led by Gavin Green of New Mexico who lit up the course with an 10-under 67-67--134, to give him a commanding six-stroke lead over a pair of golfers.
The Beavers sit in 10th place in the 14-team field with 18 holes to play after finishing the long opening day with a 22-over 300-298--598. New Mexico dominated the field with a 14-under 562, 12 strokes better than Washington (2-under 574) and 13 better than North Carolina and San Diego, who are each tied for third with a 1-under 575.

Junior Brian Jung and senior Alex Franklin were both steady all day, as Jung had five birdies in the two rounds to shoot a 5-over 74-75--149 and Franklin was a stroke back with a 6-over 75-75--150 despite dropping only one birdie.
Senior Scott Kim played two strokes better in the afternoon to finish the day with a 10-over 78-76--154 and sophomore Conner Kumpula carded rounds of 78-80.
The final round will begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday with tee times off the first and 10th holes. The Beavers will start at 9:21 a.m. on the 10th hole and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
