Freshmen Pace Beavers At Husky Invitational

BREMERTON, Wash. – It was a pair of Oregon State freshmen who stole the show in the final round of the Husky Invitational on Tuesday, as Jonas Liebich fired a 1-under 71 and Tyler Collier carded an even-par 72 to help the Beavers finish the two-day, 54-hole tournament in seventh place.
Liebich had three birdies and two bogeys to post his first collegiate round in red figures and Collier capped a terrific start to his college career with three birdies and three bogeys to finish in a team-best 10th place.
The newcomers helped the Beavers maintain their place on the leaderboard after Monday’s 36 holes, finishing with a 20-over 300-291-293--884 at the par-72, 7,179-yard Gold Mountain Olympic Course.
“It was a great job by our two freshmen today,” Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. “Tyler didn’t have his best stuff from tee to green today, but he found a way to claw out a really solid round. Las night Jonas was pretty upset and down on himself. I challenged him to know that he can really help the team today and he did it. It was great to see.”
Collier was rock solid all three rounds with a 1-over 73 and pair of even-par 72’s for a 1-over 217 that notched him a top-10 finish in a very competitive field. The Chico, Calif., native dropped eight birdies over the 54 holes with six of those coming on the back nine.
Liebich, who also competed in the team’s first tournament of the 2014-15 season, bounced back from a tourney-opening 79 to card a 3-over 75 and 1-under 71 and move into a tie for 35th place, while junior Brian Jung recorded the fifth top-20 finish of his Oregon State career with a 5-over 72-74-75--221 for a tie for 17th place
Senior Alex Franklin was 6 over through nine holes on Tuesday before rallying with three birdies and six bogeys to shoot a 3-over 75 and finish in a tie for 27th with a 7-over 78-70-75--223. Sophomore Kevin Murphy, who filled in for an injured Conner Kumpula, posted a 12-over 77-75-76--228 for a tie for 48th place.
“The course was playing difficult today and the guys handled it really well,” Reehoorn said. “The back nine 33 by Alex showed the kind of fight he has and what I want our team to be about. In the end, it’s not where we need to be, but a lot to build on as we continue to get focus on the process of getting better each day.”
Washington held an individual tournament at the par-71, 6,707-yard Gold Mountain Cascade Course. Five Oregon State golfers competed in that event and their results are: 3. Brett Johnson 70-71-72--213 (E); t5. Chris Tedesco 73-71-71--215 (+2); t8. Scott Kim 72-69-75--216 (+3); t14. Tyler Carlson 73-74-71--218 (+5); 41. CJ Sitton 81-81-82--244 (+31).
The Beavers will compete in their third tournament in three weeks, and penultimate event of the fall season, when they tee it up Monday and Tuesday at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate at Washington State University’s Palouse Ridge Golf Course in Pullman, Wash.
