Collier, Jung Lead Beavers At Husky Invite
BREMERTON, Wash. – Freshman Tyler Collier had a solid start to his college career and junior Brian Jung was equally as impressive to put the Oregon State men’s golf team in seventh place through 36 holes of play on Monday at the Husky Invitational.
Collier shot a 1-over 73 in his first round as a Beaver and followed that with an even-par 72 in the afternoon, while Jung carded rounds of 72 and 74 at the par-72, 7,179-yard Gold Mountain Olympic Course.
Oregon State was nine strokes better in its second 18 to move into seventh place in the 15-team field with a 15-over 300-291--591 at the two-day, 54-hole tournament.
UCLA dominated the course after the lunch break, shooting an 8-under 280, to hold the clubhouse lead with an even-par 576, while San Diego State is second (1-over 577), UC Davis and Oregon are tied for third (4-over 58) and New Mexico is fifth (6-over 582).
The final round will begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday with tee times off the first and 10th holes, and live scoring is available on birdiefire.com.
“A slow start hampered us again,” Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. “The guys are ready, want to play well and probably want it too bad. We just need to relax and let it happen.”
Senior Alex Franklin fired the Beavers’ best score on Monday, a 2-under 70 in the afternoon, which included three birdies and a single bogey, after struggling a bit in the first round with a 6-over 78 to put him into a tie for 29th place with a 4-over 148.
Collier got the first birdie of his collegiate career on the par-5 sixth hole and added another on the par-5 14th for his opening 1-over 73. He was 3 over through eight holes in the second round but carded three birdies and seven pars the rest of the way for an even 72 to vault him into a tie for 11th place with a 1-over 145.
“It was fun to see Tyler play so well,” Reehoorn said. “He doesn’t seem fazed by anything and from the first tee looked like he belongs.”
Jung is tied for 19th place with a 2-over 72-74--146, which featured a team-high five birdies and an eagle on the par-5 11th hole in his morning round. He had three double-bogeys and three bogeys over the 36 holes that kept him from sitting in the top 10.
Sophomore Kevin Murphy, who replaced an injured Conner Kumpula in the lineup, is tied for 44th place with an 8-over 77-75--152 and freshman Jonas Liebich, who is making his second straight start, is tied for 56th with a 10-over 79-75--144.
“It was unfortunate to lose Conner to injury as he has been playing very well,” Reehoorn said. “He has been the best player at home two weeks in a row. Hopefully, we can get him straightened out for next week at WSU.”
Five Oregon State golfers are competing as individuals at the par-71, 6,707-yard Gold Mountain Cascade Course, which is adjacent to the Olympic Course. Senior Scott Kim and sophomore Brett Johnson lead the Beaver group with a 1-under 141 for a tie for third place, while junior Chris Tedesco is tied for seventh (2-over 144), junior Tyler Carlson is tied for 17th (5-over 147) and freshman CJ Sitton is 40th (20-over 162) in his first college tournament.
