Smith, Richardson Receive Conference Medals

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Former Oregon State soccer standouts Josh Smith and Jenna Richardson were honored as 2013-14 Pac-12 Tom Hansen Conference Medal Winners, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.
A Pac-12 Conference Medal is awarded annually to each member institution’s outstanding senior male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.
Conference medal winners have been named every year since the 1960-61 academic year. In 2009, the Pac-12 renamed the award the Tom Hansen Conference Medal in honor of Hansen, who retired at the end of June 2009 after serving for 26 years as Commissioner of the Pac-10.
Smith, a native of Federal Way, Wash., was a four-year letterwinner for head coach Steve Simmons and the Beavers, playing spots in the midfield and on OSU’s back line. He appeared in 60 total games, starting 18 as a senior and scoring his first two career goals – both game winners. He was a 2013 CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America Second Team selection, posting a 3.98 GPA while majoring in chemical engineering. Smith earned spots on the Pac-12 All-Academic First Team in each of his three years of eligibility and served as Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) president in 2013-14.
Richardson, a native of Surrey, British Columbia, was a four-year letterwinner for head coach Linus Rhode and the Beavers, while receiving numerous honors during her outstanding career. She was selected to the All-Pac-12 Second Team in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and selected to the Soccer America Freshman All-America First Team in 2010. Richardson received Pac-12 All-Academic First Team honors in 2011, 2012 and 2013 for her 3.91 GPA in human development and family science. She also received CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District recognition.
