Last Game
Ben Wetzler spun a three-hit shutout as the Beavers defeated USC, 2-0, Saturday to clinch an outright claim to the Pac-12 Championship. The OSU defense turned four double plays in the win and Jeff Hendrix robbed a USC home run in the ninth to seal the shutout. Gabe Clark and Kavin Keyes both drove in runs in the first. The teams combined for six hits.
Take The Crown
Oregon State’s Pac-12 Championship clinching victory on Saturday gave the Beavers four since the then-Pac-10 unified prior to the 1999 season. The four ties the Beavers with Arizona State and Stanford for the most since the unification, combing for 12. USC and UCLA have two apiece.
Going For 24 Sunday
The Beavers will be looking to win 24 Pac-12 games on Sunday for the second consecutive season. The 2013 club set the Pac-12 record for most league victories since 1999, and the Beavers can match it Sunday. Oregon State has gone 47-12 (.797) in league play since 2013. Since 2011, OSU is 82-34 (.707).
Wetzler Continues Starters’ Brilliance
The Oregon State pitching staff has been phenomenal this season and the starters have been dominant. As a group, they’re 33-6 with a 1.65 earned run average in 355 innings this season. They’ve accumulated 38 quality starts (71.6 percent of OSU’s games) and the Beavers are 34-4 when that happens.
Clark Keeps It Going
Gabe Clark pushed his hit streak to nine games with his first-inning, game-winning single. The sophomore is 13-for-29 (.448) with seven RBI during the streak.
Singles
• If the season ended today, the 2014 club would set the school-record for best ERA in a single season at 2.12. The staff’s ERA in Pac-12 play is 1.88.
• The Beavers have allowed four earned runs over their last five Pac-12 games, a stretch that has included 44 innings. That’s an ERA of 0.81.
• The Beavers and Trojans combined for one hit from the fifth inning on Saturday.
• Oregon State has won its last two regular-season finales.
• Michael Conforto set the OSU single-season record for walks with his 48th and 49th.
• Ben Wetzler’s 35th career win Saturday moved him into 10th place in Pac-12 history.
