Wetzler, Fry Named Pitching Semifinalists
LUBBOCK, Texas – Ben Wetzler and Jace Fry have combined for 21 victories and a 1.21 earned run average this season.
On Wednesday, the two were named as semifinalists for the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s Pitcher of the Year Watch List as it was trimmed down to 18. The duo join Virginia and UC Irvine as teams with two pitchers on the list, and they also represent 67 percent of the players selected from the Pac-12 Conference.
They’ve also combined for four Pac-12 Conference Pitcher of the Week honors and two national honors. Wetzler is on the watch list for the Golden Spikes Award and Dick Howser Trophy; both are given annually to the nation’s top collegiate player.
Fry, meanwhile, leads the Pac-12 with 11 wins and has a 1.50 ERA in a team-leading 107 2/3 innings. He’s struck out 87 and opponents are batting just .193 against him.
Wetzler is 10-1 this season and has the nation’s lowest ERA (0.84) and batting average against (.146). The lefty has 68 strikeouts in 86 innings and has allowed just 42 hits and eight earned runs.
The award will be presented on June 28 at the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s Night of Champions in Lubbock. Previous winners include Mark Appel, Trevor Bauer and Stephen Strasburg.
Oregon State closes out its regular season this weekend when visiting USC for a three-game series that starts Friday at 4:05 p.m. PT. Saturday’s game is at 4:05 p.m. as well and the teams close out the series Sunday at 12:05 p.m. All three games will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
