Wetzler Earns National Honors

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. ? Ben Wetzler was named the NCBWA’s National Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday, joining Jace Fry as Beavers to earn such honors this season.
Wetzler’s comes on the heels of his two-hit shutout of No. 5 Washington on Sunday in the Beavers’ 3-0 win. He held the Huskies to four baserunners ? including two walks ? and did not allow Washington to put a baserunner into scoring position. He retired all nine leadoff batters he faced and struck out nine in the victory.
Wetzler improved to 10-1 on the year, with the win, and lowered his earned run average to a national-best 0.84. His .146 batting average against is also good for No. 1 while his 0.78 WHIP is third.
Fry earned his national honor on May 6, after shutting out California. He and Wetzler have combined for four Pac-12 Conference Player of the Week honors and two national awards.
The Beavers play a nonleague contest at Oregon on Tuesday night and then go to Los Angeles for a Friday-Sunday series against USC that concludes the regular season.
