Wetzler Named Pac-12 Pitcher Of The Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Oregon State senior Ben Wetzler was named the Pac-12 Conference’s Pitcher of the Week Monday, just a day after helping guide the Beavers to a series win over No. 5 Washington.
It’s the first weekly honor of Wetzler’s career, and came for good reason. The lefty allowed just two hits and two walks to the Pac-12’s top offensive club, and did not allow the Huskies to put a runner in scoring position in the Beavers’ 3-0 win. He retired all nine leadoff batters he faced and forced the Huskies to go 0-for-5 with runners on base.
The complete-game effort was his second of the season.
Wetzler improved to 10-1 on the year, with the win, and lowered his earned run average to a national-best 0.84. His .146 batting average against is also good for No. 1 while his 0.78 WHIP is third.
The pitching honor is the fourth of the season for the Beavers, tying the program’s previous best – since 1999 – set in 2010. The Beavers have 73 all-time pitcher of the week honors, and 27 since the then-Pac-10 unified prior to the 1999 season.
The Beavers play a nonleague contest at Oregon on Tuesday night and then go to Los Angeles for a Friday-Sunday series against USC that concludes the regular season.
