Men?s Golf In Fifth Place Through 36 Holes - Oregon State University Athletics

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – The Oregon State men’s golf team played 36 holes on Monday and sits in fifth place, and only seven shots out of the lead, at the 18-team, two-day, 54-hole Redhawk Invitational.

The Beavers shot a 3-over 281-282--563 at the par-70, 7,047-yard Chambers Bay and have a chance to win their second straight tournament after taking the team title at the Duck Invitational. UCLA and San Diego are tied for first with a 4-under 556, Washington is third with a 2-under 558 and Arizona State sits in fourth with a 1-over 561.

The final round begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday with a shotgun start and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.

“It was a long, tough day and overall we were solid from start to finish,” Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. “We didn’t do much that was special, but at the same time, nothing that got us into any trouble. Individually, Kevin Murphy and Brian Jung were awesome. The best part for both of them was that they got off to shaky starts this morning and didn’t let it shake their confidence.”

Freshman Kevin Murphy posted his eighth and ninth career rounds in red figures with a 2-under 68 in the morning and a 1-under 69 in the afternoon to put him fourth place with a 3-under 137. He recorded a career-best tie for third place when the Beavers won the Duck Invitational last week.

Murphy will need the round of his lifetime to catch Grant Forrest of San Diego, who lit up the course with a 12-under 63-65--128 to give him a seven-stroke advantage over Jon Rahm of Arizona State (5-under 68-67--135) and eight-stroke lead over San Diego’s Mathias Dahl (4-under 70-66-136).

Sophomore Brian Jung was solid both rounds as he shot a 1-over 71 in the morning and a 1-under 69 in the afternoon to sit in a tie for 15^th place with an even-par 140. He took advantage of the perfect weather conditions to card five birdies and five bogeys with a lot of pars in the two rounds.

“Brian three putted his first two greens, and if that had happened earlier in the year, I’m not sure he would have responded like he did today,” Reehoorn said. “It is fun to watch his growth.”

Junior Alex Franklin was also consistent in the two rounds as he carded a 70 and 72 to put him in a tie for 21^st with a 2-over 142. Junior Scott Kim is tied for 50^th with a 7-over 75-72--147 and senior David Fink is a stroke back with an 8-over 72-76--148 for a tie for 53^rd.

“Tomorrow we expect the course to play a little tougher as they are moving the tees back about 300 yards,” Reehoorn said. “But our guys have shown they will be ready for the challenge.”
