COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior David Fink fired a 1-over 72 in the final round of the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate on Sunday to help the Oregon State men’s golf team finish the two-day, 54-hole tournament in 10th place.
The Beavers shot an 18-over 302 in windy conditions at the par-71, 7,455-yard Scarlet Course at The Ohio State University Golf Club on Sunday and finished the tournament with a 46-over 295-301-302--898 to finish 10th in the 15-team field.
“The course is very tough and when you add a consistent 20 to 30 mile-per-hour wind, it makes it brutally tough,” Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. “Both days we got off to a very good start and make a couple of bogeys in the wind and just didn’t respond to it very well.”
Fink eagled the par-5 fourth hole and birdied his final hole of the day, the par-4 ninth, to go with two bogeys and a double for his 1-over round, which moved him up the leaderboard 17 spots into a tie for 20th with a 9-over 75-75-72--222.
“In today’s wind, the round David played was awesome,” Reehoorn said. “It’s nice to see him play like we know he can.”
Sophomore Brian Jung also had a good tournament as he finished in a tie for 25th place with a 10-over 71-75-77--223, while junior Alex Franklin was steady throughout the three rounds, finishing with a 12-over 74-76-75--225 for a tie for 30th place.
Freshman Kevin Murphy finished in a tie for 61st place with an 18-over 78-75-78--231 and junior Scott Kim was a stroke back with a 19-over 75-77-80--232 to finish in sole 65th place.
Georgia Tech won the team title with a 6-over 858 and Frederik Hammer of Ohio State and Ollie Schniederjans of Georgia Tech shared individual honors with a 3-under 210.
The Beavers return to action Friday, April 25 to Sunday, April 27 at the Pac-12 Championship, which will be held in Marana, Ariz.
“Throughout the spring we have been pretty good, but the difference between us playing well and not is the way we carry ourselves and play with confidence,” Reehoorn said. “We have 10 days to get ready for Pac-12’s, and I’m excited to get home, help our guys get better and be ready to compete for a conference championship.”
