Last Game
Oregon State swept a doubleheader from Northern Illinois, winning 2-0 and 12-2, respectively, on Saturday. Jace Fry highlighted the day with a no-hitter in game one while Jerad Casper and Gabe Clark each homered to pace the Beavers in game two. Dylan Davis provided all the offense Oregon State needed in game one, hitting a two-run home run in the sixth inning.
Lowering That ERA
Oregon State has a 0.36 earned run average in the three games against NIU, pushing the club’s overall mark to a Pac-12 Conference low 2.09. In four games this week, including the win over Portland, Oregon State has allowed just one earned run while allowing eight hits walking eight and striking out 37. The ERA has lowered from 2.67 before the UP game to the present 2.09.
Clark’s Coming On
Gabe Clark’s home run in game two highlighted his day during the doubleheader, and it, coupled with a double, enabled him to extend his hit streak to six games, in which he is 10-for-20 with eight RBI, three doubles, a triple and a home run. His three RBI on the home run set a career-high for the sophomore.
Fry’s No-No
Jace Fry’s no-hitter Saturday was the fifth in Oregon State history and the third since head coach Pat Casey took over the program in 1995. It’s been less than three years since Josh Osich tossed his, which was OSU’s previous. That’s the smallest gap in no-hitters, as Osich’s came four years after the previous one. Before a combined no-hitter in 2007, the Beavers hadn’t thrown one since 1967.
Same Old Walk Story
Oregon State walked twice in the series-opening win, both by Michael Conforto, but took some more free passes in the doubleheader, walking a combined 13 times. The Beavers have walked a Pac-12 best 97 times in 2014 while the team’s pitchers have issued just 35.
Singles
• Fans are encouraged to keep in mind that clocks spring forward on Sunday.
• OSU is on pace for 20 shutouts this season after recording five in the first 16 games.
• Jerad Casper’s and Gabe Clark’s home runs Saturday were each the first of their respective careers.
• OSU has a team WHIP of 0.97.
• Pat Casey needs to hit 688 wins to move into 10th place all-time in the Pac-12.
