Last Game
Ben Wetzler allowed four hits and a run in 7 2/3 innings in his 2014 debut to lead the Beavers to a 13-2 win over Wright State Sunday at Goss Stadium. The Beavers took advantage of 13 walks in the win, which saw OSU send 11 to the plate in both the sixth and seventh innings, scoring five runs each frame to break the game open. Wetzler, meanwhile, struck out five in tossing 89 pitches. Caleb Hamilton and Michael Howard each drove home three runs.
18 Games
Oregon State carries an 18-game winning streak into the game against the Pilots, and is the second-longest all-time against UP after winning 21 straight from 1959-69. Nine of the 18 wins have come at home.
Walk This Way
Oregon State has a decided advantage in walks in its previous 12 games this season. The Beavers have walked a Pac-12 leading 73 times this season, while opponents have been issued just 27 free passes, which is second in the conference. The next closest walk total for a club is 46 by Arizona. OSU is on pace for 334 this season, which would be three shy of the school record of 337 in 1998.
Meanwhile, Individually
Michael Conforto comes into Tuesday’s game with a Pac-12 leading 17 runs driven in while Dylan Davis is close behind at 15. Only Arizona can claim more in the top 10, with four, albeit with only one player in double figures. Kavin Keyes is also tied for the league lead with 18 hits while Trever Morrison is tops in runs scored at 16. Conforto, not surprisingly, leads with 13 walks.
Starters
Oregon State’s starters have been sharp through the first 12 games of the 2014 season. They’ve accumulated 11 quality starts and have a 1.67 earned run average in 86 1/3 innings. The starting staff has 45 strikeouts to 18 walks, which has led to a 0.94 WHIP (with 64 hits allowed).
Singles
• Friday’s series opener with Northern Illinois has been moved to a 5:05 p.m. start.
• The Beavers have outscored opponents, 20-3, in the seventh inning of games but have been outscored, 16-0, in the ninth.
• Oregon State and Arizona rank No. 1 or 2 in the Pac-12 in runs scored, hits and runs batted in.
• OSU batters have led off an inning 101 times this season, and have reached base 48 times. That’s a 47.5-percent success rate.
