Chirichigno Doubles; Beavers Fall to Wildcats 14-1

TUCSON, Ariz. – Junior CJ Chirichigno went 1-for-2 with an RBI double, but the Oregon State softball team could not overcome the bats of No. 7/9 Arizona, as the Beavers fell to the Wildcats 14-1 Monday afternoon in Tucson.
Chirichigno brought home the lone Oregon State (11-17, 2-4 Pac-12) run of the game, firing a double down the left-field line in the fourth inning to score freshman Alexis Gonzalez, who had reached on a walk. The two-bagger gave Chirichigno her 14th RBI and sixth extra-base hit of the season.
Freshman Kiki Pepi recorded the first hit of her collegiate career in the fifth inning, slapping a single to left field. Junior Dani Gilmore and sophomore Kori Nishitomi both tallied hits in the contest. Junior Melanie Dembinski allowed one hit and no earned runs in two inning of work, striking out four after entering the game in the third inning.
Arizona (28-6, 3-3) got off to a strong start at the plate, scoring six runs in the opening frame to jump out to an early lead. The Wildcats added another run in the second, and looked like they might plate a few more, but sophomore Sarah Shadinger worked her way out of a bases-loaded jam to limit the damage.
Arizona added seven in the third to take a double-digit lead, as Wildcats took the win in five innings.
The Beavers return home this week to take on California in a three game series that will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday.
