Last Game
Ben Wetzler tossed seven shutout innings and Gabe Clark drove home two to pace the Beavers to a series-opening 4-0 victory over Arizona State on Friday night. Andy Peterson and Trever Morrison also had two hits for Oregon State, which won its 11th consecutive game. Wetzler struck out eight and walked just one with allowing only two hits. Clark, meanwhile, drove home two with a bloop single to right in a three-run fifth inning.
ERA Keeps Shrinking
Oregon State’s team earned run average keeps shrinking, and considering the starters’ ERA is a minimal 1.32, that should come as no surprise. The team’s ERA is at a season low 1.74, which is second only nationally to Houston, which has a 1.58 team ERA.
Oh, And Shutouts
Oregon State’s 4-0 win over Arizona State Friday was the Beavers’ eighth shutout of the season, which moves the team into a tie for second nationally with LSU. The Beavers and Tigers trail only South Carolina, which has nine. OSU is on pace for 20, which would naturally shatter last season’s national-best 12.
All Alone In First
Oregon State took over sole possession of first place in the Pac-12 standings with Friday’s 4-0 win and Washington’s 2-0 victory over UCLA. The Beavers have been in first, or tied for first, all four games this season, and on 19 of a possible 34 dates dating back to the 2013 season.
They Stole A Base
Arizona State went 1-for-2 in stolen base attempts Friday, and opponents are now just 6-for-18 (.333) in that category this season. It was the first steal by an opponent since Portland swiped a bag on March 18.
Singles
• The Beavers are 15-0 this season when out-hitting an opponent and 13-0 when allowing two runs or less.
• OSU walked just one batter in Friday’s win, and the Beavers’ staff has issued two walks or less in 15 of the team’s 22 games this season.
• The Beavers have issued 45 walks this season. The pitching staff has allowed just 38 earned runs.
• Michael Conforto has reached base safely in all but one game this season. The junior was 0-for-3 but had a walk in Friday’s win.
• The 2,792 in attendance Friday gave the Beavers 2,000-plus in all 11 games in 2014. OSU is averaging 2,442 at home.
• Oregon State has won 15 of its last 16 games.
• Andrew Moore is 9-1 lifetime at home.
