Last Game
Jace Fry tossed a three-hit shutout and Michael Conforto drove in three runs as the Beavers swept Utah with an 8-0 win at Smith’s Ballpark on Sunday. Fry allowed a double in the third and singles in the sixth and ninth to improve to 4-0 on the year. Logan Ice sparked the Beavers offensively with a 3-for-4 effort.
Conforto Hits No. 30
Michael Conforto’s three RBI Sunday gave the junior 30 on the season. That also pushes him to 153 for his career, which gives him sole possession of fourth in Oregon State history. He needs one to tie for third, meanwhile.
Casey Needs One
Head coach Pat Casey will reach another milestone when he wins his next game. The next victory will give Casey 689 victories at Oregon State, which will move him into sole possession of 10th all-time in the Pac-12, surpassing Cal’s Bob Milano.
Starters Are Scary
Ben Wetzler, Andrew Moore and Jace Fry all came away with quality starts against Utah, pitching in 23 1/3 of the 27 innings against the Utes. Each has an ERA of less than 2.00 this year and OSU’s starting staff has an overall ERA of 1.39.
Wetzler’s Solid
Ben Wetzler comes into Friday’s start with a 3-0 record and 0.76 earned run average in his three appearances this season. The lefty has won his last 13 decisions and the Beavers are 18-1 when he starts dating back to last season. Wetzler is also 14-2 all-time at Goss Stadium.
Singles
• Friday’s televised broadcast is the first of 18 games on TV this season, with 17 coming on the Pac-12 Networks.
• OSU’s pitching staff has a WHIP of 1.04. Its starting staff has a WHIP of 0.92.
• The Beavers come into Friday’s game just two wins shy of the 2013 club’s record-setting pace. A win, however, would push OSU to one game shy as the 2013 team lost its 22nd game.
• OSU has at least one 10-game win streak in four of its last five seasons. The current 10-game streak is the second-longest active streak in the nation.
• Opponents have stolen just five bases in 16 attempts this season, a 31-percent success rate.
• OSU is 17-0 when leading after six innings.
