Last Game
Ben Wetzler took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and Michael Conforto hit a solo home run in the fourth to help send the Beavers to a 6-1 series-opening win over Utah Friday night. Wetzler ended the night with two hits allowed as he improved to 3-0 on the year. Oregon State also scored five in the sixth to extend the lead to 6-0. Utah scored its lone run of the game on a double in the eighth.
Dropping That ERA
Oregon State’s team earned run average dropped to less than 2.00 after Friday’s 6-1 win. The club’s ERA now stands at 1.97 for the second time this season. It was last at 1.97 after the Beavers’ win over NIU on Sunday.
Davis Moves To A Five-Gamer
Dylan Davis moved his hit streak to five games with a 3-for-5 effort in Friday’s win. The junior is 12-for-17 during his streak and his effort Friday pushed his batting average to .268.
That Seems Familiar
Michael Conforto’s solo home run Friday was his first of the season, and 25th of his career. Which, naturally, makes it a common action for the junior. Four of his 25 career home runs have come in Salt Lake City after he hit three in the 2012 series. In seven career games against the Utes, he is 11-for-30 (.367) with one double, four home runs and 11 runs batted in.
Another Quality Start
Ben Wetzler’s effort gave the Beavers 15 in 19 games in 2014, and OSU is 13-2 when it happens. The team’s starters have combined to go 13-2 with a 1.49 earned run average in 126 2/3 innings. The starters have 83 strikeouts to 31 walks and 71 hits. That’s an impressive WHIP of 0.81. That’s not a typo.
Singles
• Fans should note that Smith’s Ballpark is the same location as the series played in 2012. It was recently renamed after being known as Spring Mobile Ballpark.
• OSU finished with more hits than an opponent for the 11th time this season. The Beavers are 11-0 when that happens.
• The Beavers are two wins off last season’s record-tying 18-1 mark after 19 games. They’re two ahead of the 2012 club which was 14-5 at the same point.
• Ben Wetzler had allowed just one hit in his last 17 hits prior to the two he allowed in the eighth inning Friday.
• OSU has sent nine or more to the plate in an inning eight times in 2014.
