CHULA VISTA, Calif. – Junior Alex Franklin shot a career-best 5-under 67 on the final day at the Lamkin San Diego Classic on Tuesday, helping Oregon State claim 6th place in the 13-team field with a 23-over 288-307-292--887.
Franklin bounced back from a tough first day by hitting five birdies and 13 shots for par in the final at the par-72, 7,033-yard San Diego Country Club. He jumped all the way up from 41st place to tie for 13th with a 2-over 73-78-67--218.
"A great final round by Alex (Franklin)," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "It was great to see him bounce back after such a disappointing 2nd round. He made a nice two-putt for par on 2 and a long par putt on 3 that allowed him to get some momentum going into the round. Alex's round allowed us to feel a little better about how we played today. Dave (Fink) was a bit off all day and (Kevin) Murphy just never seemed to be able to hole any putts, but after the way we finished yesterday afternoon, I was happy to see the guys fighting until the end today."
Freshman Kevin Murphy also tied for 13th place, posting a 2-over 72-72-74--218 in the two-day, 54-hole tournament.
Oregon State shot a 4-over 292 in the final, but was limited by a tough second round on Monday that kept the Beavers from moving up higher on the leaderboard.
"Unfortunately we had a mental lapse for about 12 holes yesterday afternoon that in the end really cost us this event," Reehoorn said. "If we are going to compete with better teams, stretches like we had yesterday just can't happen. What is going to make the biggest impact on our success the rest of the year is getting a fourth and fifth man who can contribute on a consistent basis."
Senior David Fink ended the day in a three-way tie for 32nd place after shooting an 8-over 70-79-75--224.
Junior Scott Kim finished in a tie for 48th with a 14-over 73-78-79--230, while redshirt freshman Brett Johnson posted a 78-79-76--233 to finish in a tie for 59th.
USC won the team title with a 12-under 286-286-280--852 and San Diego State finished second with a 5-under 283-287-289--859.
Individually, Xander Schauffele of San Diego State took home first place after firing an 11-under 67-71-67--205. Coming in a close second was Rico Hoey of USC, with a 9-under 71-69-67--207.
The Beavers return to action in two weeks when they compete at the Oregon Duck Invitational on Monday, March 24 and Tuesday, March 25 in Eugene.
