CHULA VISTA, Calif. – Freshman Kevin Murphy fired an even-par 72-72--144 for Oregon State, putting him in a tie for 11th place on the first day of the two-day, 54-hole Lamkin San Diego Classic.
The Beavers finished the day in sole possession of 7th place in the 13-team field, after shooting a 19-over 288-307--595 as a team at the par-72, 7,033-yard San Diego Country Club.
Murphy played well in the first round, hitting five birdies, nine shots for par, three bogeys and one double-bogey on the first 18 holes. He stayed consistent in the second round, shooting for par on 11 holes and cashing in on four birdies.
Senior David Fink had a solid outing in his first go around, shooting a 2-under 70. The second round was not as kind, as he posted a 7-over 79. Fink ended the day in a seven-way tie for 28th place.
Junior Alex Franklin and Junior Scott Kim tied for 41st after each recording a 7-over 73-78--151 on the first day in San Diego.
Redshirt freshman Brett Johnson struggled to find rhythm on day one, shooting a 13-over 78-79--157 for the Beavers.
The final round will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday with players starting on the first and 10th holes.
