WAIKOLOA, Hawai’i – Senior David Fink tied his career-best by shooting a 5-under 67 to move into a tie for 12th place individually, as Oregon State remained in 14th after the second day of the 24th Annual Amer Ari Invitational.
The Beavers finished the day with a 7-under 281 at the par-72, 7,074-yard Waikoloa Kings’ Course. On Thursday, Oregon State posted a 3-under 285 performance that placed the team in 14th out of the 20-team field. They would maintain 14th place after day two with a combined 10-under 285-281--566.
"Overall I felt like we played much better today," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "We still made a few silly mistakes but overall the scores were better and I thought the course played tougher. We have one last round tomorrow to come out and simply try to just make as many birdies as we can. It is going to take a super low round to move up the leaderboard, but I think we have one left in us."
Fink was on fire on the front nine, going 4-under 32 after hitting five birdies, three shots for par and one bogey. Down the stretch, the senior stayed consistent, posting a 1-under 35 and forcing his way into a six-way tie for 12th place in the three-day, 54-hole tournament.
Freshman Kevin Murphy rose to a tie for 42nd place after shooting a 3-under 69 that included four birdies and one bogey.
Junior Alex Franklin shot an even-par 72 for the second consecutive day and stayed put on the leaderboard in a tie for 63rd.
Freshman Kevin Chen shot a 1-over 73, while junior Scott Kim posted a 5-over 77, which tied the two Beavers for 99th place in the tournament.
Oklahoma State remained atop the team leaderboard after the second day with a 28-under 271-277--548. Oregon climbed into second, just two strokes behind with a 26-under 276-264--550.
Individually, Cameron Wilson of Stanford took control of first place with a 12-under 67-65--132. Three golfers were hot on his trail, a mere stroke behind at 11-under 133.
The final round will begin at 7:30 a.m. Hawai’i time (9:30 a.m. PT) on Saturday with a shotgun start.
