WAIKOLOA, Hawai’i – Senior David Fink shot a 2-under 70 and Junior Scott Kim fired a 1-under 71 at the 24th Annual Amer Ari Invitational on Thursday, placing the Oregon State men's golf team in 14th place after the opening round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament.
As a team, Oregon State shot a 3-under 285 at the par-72, 7,074-yard Waikoloa Kings’ Course, finishing just ahead of second ranked Georgia Tech (2-under 286) after 18 holes in the 20-team field.
"We got off to a really slow start today and it shows in our team score today, but I was proud of the way the guys battled back," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "After being a good 4-6 over par early we competed until the end and gave ourselves a chance the last two rounds for a good tournament."
Fink finished day one in a tie for 32nd place with 22 other golfers. He hit three birdies on the front end, and finished with two bogeys and another birdie on the final hole of the back nine.
Kim tied for 54th after three birdies, 13 pars and two bogeys on the first day of the tournament.
Junior Alex Franklin and freshman Kevin Murphy each tied for 63rd overall after shooting an even-par 72.
Freshman Kevin Chen finished the day in an 11-way tie for 100th, shooting a 3-over 75.
Oklahoma State ended the day in command of first place after a 17-under 271 performance as a team. TCU finished a stroke back with a 16-under 272 for control of second.
Leading the way individually was Thomas Lim of Oregon, who shot an 8-under 64. In a close second, USC's Rico Huey was just a stroke behind after he fired a 7-under 65.
"The biggest adjustment we need is to just let it go and play golf like we do at home. Started out a bit tense...we need to just relax and play fearlessly," Reehoorn said.
The second round will begin at 7:30 a.m. Hawai’i time (9:30 a.m. PT) on Friday with a shotgun start.
