Oregon State vs. Denver Quotes
OREGON STATE QUOTES
Head Coach Steve Simmons
On getting the first tournament win in school history…
“It is good, you know. I was telling the guys, in tournament play you have to survive and advance and that’s what we did tonight. I thought the defending was pretty resilient after we took that goal. I’ll give a lot of credit to Denver, I thought they were good tonight, I really did. You can see why they’re in the tournament. Like I told you guys before, you can’t fake your way into the tournament and they should be congratulated on a very good season. I’m proud of our guys and now it’s on to the next step.”
On attendance and home atmosphere…
“I’ll tell you, the boys love playing at Lorenz (Field). The crowd was able to witness history and it was fantastic. It was good that the guys could deliver a result and advance because it’s been a long time. I’m so proud of them.”
Senior goalkeeper Matt Bersano
On upcoming matchup with Creighton…
“We feel great, it’s a quick turn around and this win is a weight off our shoulders in terms of the history of the program, just like making the tournament. Now we just have to keep taking it off, we have no pressure any more. We’re here to play, we’re here to win, and I don’t mind who we play next, it doesn’t matter.”
Freshman forward Jordan Jones
On scoring the only goal of the game…
“Obviously, it was a great feeling to put one in early and usually when we score we build off that energy and try to keep it going. I’m proud of my teammates and it’s a blessing to be out here. We’re not going to give up and we showed it tonight.”
DENVER QUOTES
Bobby Muuss, Denver Head Coach
"I think we came out a little bit slow, getting used to the surface. This is a hard place to play. No piece of grass really stays in place out here. We wasted about 15 or 20 minutes of the game I thought, before we really started to settle in. We really were able to find a rhythm for the rest of the game, and to get to the endline almost at will. We produced some really clear cut chances, which is all you really want in an NCAA Tournament game is get clear cut chances, and we did that, but unfortunately, we just weren't able to get any by the keeper tonight."
"It's just disappointing. I think our players and this program deserved better today. Give Oregon State a lot of credit though. They have some very dangerous weapons up top, and play a style that's conducive for the athletes that they have in the attack. Unfortunately, we just weren't able to find the back of the net."
Final thoughts on the evening
“It’s just disappointing,” Muuss said. “I don’t think soccer won today. Give Oregon State a lot of credit though. They have some very dangerous weapons up top, and play a style that’s conducive for the athletes that they have. Unfortunately, we just weren’t able to find the back of the net.”
