TUCSON, Ariz. – Senior David Fink fired a 4-under 67 in the final round of the Arizona Intercollegiate on Tuesday, but the sensational round didn’t help the Oregon State men’s golf team move up the leaderboard as they finished in 11th place in the first event of the spring.
Fink, who struggled during the 36 holes on Monday, responded in a big way on Tuesday. He started on the 11th hole and was 2 over after his first nine before catching fire with two eagles, two birdies and five pars for a blistering 6-under 29 over the final stretch. The lefty moved from a tie for 55th place into a tie for 23rd with an 8-over 79-75-67--221 at the par-71, 7,262-yard Sewailo Golf Club.
As a team, the Beavers had too many big numbers at the two-day, 54-hole tournament, finishing with a 48-over 303-299-298--900 to finish in 11th place in the 14-team field. None of the teams in the field finished in red numbers, but California won the title with a 1-over 281-285-287--853 to finish 14 strokes ahead of host Arizona, which posted a 15-over 290-291-286--867.
“The black squiggles on the golfstat.com tell the story. We beat ourselves from start to finish,” Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. “We need to find a shot that just gets the ball in the fairway when we don’t feel comfortable instead of just doing the same thing over and over.
“It wasn’t the start we wanted or needed to begin the season, but it is a long season. We’ve got to learn from our mistakes and keep getting better.”
Golden Bear teammates Brandon Hagy and Joel Stalter shared medalist honors with a 2-under 211 since there wasn’t a playoff for the individual title. Justin Keiley of BYU and Arizona’s Kolton Lapa finished a stroke back with a 1-under 212.
Junior Alex Franklin was the steadiest Oregon State golfer over the three rounds, as he carded a 6-over 74-72-73--219 to finish in a tie for 17th place. He had two birdies in each of the three rounds and had nothing worse than a bogey on Tuesday.
Freshman Kevin Murphy finished in a tie for 37th place with a 12-over 73-76-76--225, while freshman Conner Kumpula shot a 25-over 80-76-82--238 for a tie for 74th and sophomore Brian Jung finished in sole 76th with a 26-over 77-78-84--239.
Fink, who was selected to the All-Pac-12 Second and PING All-Region Teams last season, has now shot 37 under-par rounds in his career. His best career round is a 5-under 67 three different times, most recently at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational this past fall.
The Beavers return to action Thursday, Feb. 6 through Saturday, Feb. 8 at the 24th Annual Amer Ari Invitational in Waikoloa, Hawai’i.
