June 8, 2013
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Danny Hayes, Scott Schultz, Dan Child and Jake Rodriguez have all seen their names called early in day three of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Saturday.
Hayes is a 13th-round selection (393rd overall) by the Chicago White Sox, while Schultz went in the 17th round (502nd overall) to Miami. Dan Child was an 18th rounder by Philadelphia (541st overall) and Jake Rodriguez went in the 19th to Houston (557th).
For Hayes and Schultz, it's their first career selections. Both Child and Rodriguez were selected in 2010 but opted to attend Oregon State.
Hayes, a senior first baseman, is batting .270 with 12 doubles, five home runs and 37 runs batted in this season. His five home runs are second on the club and his 37 RBI rank third.
Schultz, a junior right-handed pitcher, is 2-1 this season and has a 2.09 earned run average in 23 appearances, all of which have come in relief. He has a team-leading 10 saves with 32 strikeouts in 38 2/3 innings.
Child, a junior right-handed pitcher, is 4-1 with a 2.82 earned run average in 11 games this season, nine of which have been starts. Opponents are batting just .238 against him in 38 1/3 innings.
Rodriguez, a junior catcher, is batting .268 with nine doubles, two home runs and 32 RBI this season while opponents have stolen just 13 bases in 32 attempts (.406). He's a first-team All-Pac-12 selection and was named to the Corvallis Regional All-Tournament Team last weekend.
The four selections bring OSU's total to seven after Ben Wetzler (fifth round to Philadelphia), Matt Boyd (sixth to Toronto) and Tyler Smith (eighth to Seattle) were taken on Friday.
The draft continues through Saturday and will last 40 rounds.
The Super Regional against Kansas State starts at 4 p.m. Saturday, 7 p.m. Sunday, and 4 p.m. Monday. Note, Monday's game is an if necessary game in the best-of-three series.
All games will air on ESPNU and be streamed on ESPN3.com. Live stats and an Oregon State audio broadcast can be found on osubeavers.com.
