Three Baseball Players Taken On Day Two Of Draft

June 7, 2013
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Three Oregon State baseball players were taken on the second day of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Friday. The draft has completed 10 rounds entering the last day, which is on Saturday.
Left-handed pitcher Ben Wetzler was the first Beaver selected, going in the fifth round (151st overall) to Philadelphia, while fellow left-hander Matt Boyd was a sixth-rounder (175th overall) by the Toronto Blue Jays. Tyler Smith wrapped up the Beavers' draft day with an eighth-round selection (237th overall) by Seattle.
The draft concludes with rounds 11-40 on Saturday.
Wetzler is 8-1 with a 1.98 earned run average and two complete games in 14 starts this season. He was named to the Pac-12 Conference's first team last week and was a Corvallis Regional All-Tournament Team selection after throwing a one-run complete game against Texas A&M.
It is the second selection of Wetzler's career. He was selected in the 15th round of the 2010 MLB Draft by Cleveland but chose to attend Oregon State out of Clackamas High School.
Boyd is 10-3 this season for this season and sports a 2.20 earned run average. He was named a third-team All-American by Louisville Slugger last week and is a two-time Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week. He was also named to the league's first-team.
It is the second such selection of Boyd's career after the senior was taken by Cincinnati in the 13th round last season. He did not sign.
Smith is hitting .301 this season and has seven doubles, two triples, two home runs and 24 runs batted in in 49 games. He is also 9-for-11 in stolen bases.
A native of Thousand Oaks, Calif., it is his first career MLB Draft selection.
The Beavers have now had at least one player selected in the MLB Draft every year since 1993, and multiple in all but two years during that stretch. OSU has had 35 players selected in the top 10 rounds of the draft since head coach Pat Casey's first season in 1995.
Two Oregon State signees were also selected on Friday. Outfielder Tyler O'Neill went in the third round to Seattle while infielder Justin Bohn was a seventh-round selection by Miami.
The Super Regional against Kansas State starts at 4 p.m. Saturday, 7 p.m. Sunday, and 4 p.m. Monday. Note, Monday's game is an if necessary game in the best-of-three series. All tickets for the super regional are sold out.
All games will air on ESPNU and be streamed on ESPN3.com. Live stats and an Oregon State audio broadcast can be found on osubeavers.com.
