Women's Basketball Adds To Recruiting Haul; Signs Breanna Brown

June 7, 2013
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Breanna Brown, a nationally-regarded post from Northern California, has signed with the Oregon State women's basketball program and will join the Beavers on the court for the 2013-14 season, head coach Scott Rueck announced Friday.
"I am thrilled to announce the addition of Breanna Brown to the Oregon State women's basketball family," Rueck said. "Bre is a dynamic center who comes to us from outstanding prep and summer basketball programs where she has won at the highest levels. She is a big-time rebounder and defender, an outstanding athlete and possesses a tireless work ethic. Bre is a perfect fit and I could not be more excited about all that she brings to our program."
At 6-foot-4 and rated as the 49th best player in the nation by Blue Star Basketball and 73rd according to the All Star Girls Report, the Bishop O'Dowd product is the second top-100 recruit in Oregon State's 2013 recruiting class and fourth in the last two seasons to choose the Beavers, joining incoming freshman Sydney Wiese and current student-athletes Jamie Weisner and Samantha Siegner.
Under the tutelage of Bishop O'Dowd head coach Malik McCord, Brown led her team to three Hayward Area Athletic League (HAAL) championships and one West Alameda County Conference title (2013). During her time in Oakland, the Dragons also claimed three North Coast Section (NCS) Championships and this March won their second consecutive California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State Championship. In her final high school game, Brown posted a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
The Dragons (30-3) ended their season with 24 straight wins, including 22 by double digits. Their closest margin of victory during the streak was six points and O'Dowd ended the year as the seventh-ranked team in the nation. One of the best and most consistent high school basketball programs in the country during her four-year tenure, Brown's squads amassed a 112-18 (.862) record and did not lose a league game. A natural leader, she was named team captain her sophomore year.
This past season, Brown averaged nine points and 9.4 rebounds per game. She was named to the Cal-Hi Sports All-State Division III Second Team, was San Francisco Chronicle All-Metro Honorable Mention and was selected to the Contra Costa Times All-East Bay Third Team.
The signing adds to an OSU class that was already rated among the country's best according to the All Star Girls Report. Six-foot-one point guard Sydney Wiese, named Arizona Big Schools Girls Basketball Player of the Year in early March, is ranked as the 66th best player in the country according to Blue Star Basketball, 56th by the All Star Girls Report and is 80th in the 2013 ESPN HoopGurlz listings.
Gabriella Hanson out of Troy High School in Fullerton, Calif. is the 28th ranked wing in the country, was a Cal-Hi Sports and MaxPreps All-State honoree this year and has spent the past two summers playing for Sweden in FIBA Women's European Championships.
Kolbie Orum from Maple Ridge, British Columbia, has represented Team Canada in international play, doing so at the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championships for Women in Amsterdam last August and at the FIBA Americas U16 Championships for Women in Mexico in 2011. She was the 2013 Fraser Valley MVP after leading the Maple Ridge Ramblers to a league title, pouring in 86 combined points in the semifinals and finals. The team's MVP her senior season, Orum paced her squad in scoring, rebounds and blocks and has made the B.C. Provincial All-Star Team each of the past three seasons.
Brown's inside presence will bolster an already stout Oregon State defense. The Beavers finished last season 16th in the nation and 2nd in the Pac-12 in field goal percentage defense (.346) and 11th in the country and first in the league in blocks per game (5.5). The team's .346 field goal percentage defense mark was a new school record.
