MLS Veteran Terry Boss Named Men's Soccer Assistant Coach

June 5, 2013
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Terry Boss, a four-year Major League Soccer goalkeeper who spent the past season on the sidelines at the University of Tulsa, has been added to the Oregon State men's soccer staff as an assistant coach, OSU head coach Steve Simmons announced on Wednesday.
"I am thrilled to have Terry back home in Oregon and join our soccer family here at Oregon State," Simmons said. "His coaching experience at a top-20 Division I program along with his professional and collegiate playing background will help us continue to raise the bar. Terry is passionate about making a difference in the lives of student-athletes. His time competing against some of the best teams in the MLS and in the world will help him mentor those aspiring to play at the highest level."
While an assistant coach at TU in 2012-13, the Philomath, Ore. native helped the Golden Hurricane post a 14-6-1 overall record, win the Conference USA Tournament and advance to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen. Tulsa recorded eight shutouts and faced five opponents ranked among the nation's top-25. It also finished sixth in the nation in scoring offense (2.29 gpg) and total goals (48), and seventh in total points (134).
Boss, a Tulsa alumnus, coached his alma mater after playing three years with Major League Soccer's Seattle Sounders (2009-12). Prior to that, he was with the New York Red Bulls (2008-09), as well as the United Soccer League's Charlotte Eagles (2005, 2008) and Puerto Rico Islanders (2006-07). He was also a member of the Puerto Rico National Team from 2009-12.
During his tenure with the Sounders, Boss started eight games, logging 765 minutes in goal. He picked up 28 saves and three shutouts, and posted a 6-2-1 record. Before his MLS career, Boss earned USL-2 Goalkeeper of the Year honors while helping the Charlotte Eagles reach the USL-2 Championship match in 2008. During that season, Boss had a league-leading 11 wins and nine shutouts, and was ranked second with a 0.691 goals-against average.
As an undergraduate at Tulsa, Boss (2000-04) started in 20 of 23 games, logged 1,920 minutes in goal, picked up 96 saves and six shutouts and posted a career 1.17 goals-against average. During that time he also featured for the Cascade Surge, Vermont Voltage and Fort Wayne Fever in the USL Premier Development League. Boss earned his bachelor's degree in finance in 2004 from TU.
Boss has a USSF B License and USSF Goalkeeping License. He replaces four-year Beaver assistant Adam Pearce, who recently accepted the head coaching position at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Arizona.
Oregon State has a strong core returning next season, including a pair of All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention selections in midfielders Will Seymore and Khiry Shelton. In goal, rising sophomore Matt Bersano finished with a 1.17 goals-against average, the fourth best mark in school history. His 79 saves were also good for seventh on the school's single-season list.
The Beavers will have to make do without striker Emery Welshman, who was selected in the first round, 16th overall, by Toronto FC in January's MLS SuperDraft. Colin Mitchell was also taken by the San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS Supplemental Draft.
