Beaver Track & Field Places 16 On Pac-12 All-Academic Teams

June 5, 2013
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Sixteen Oregon State women's track and field student-athletes earned recognition on the 2013 Pac-12 All-Academic teams, announced today by Commissioner Larry Scott.
Kelsi Schaer and Maureen Tremblay led the way with their selections to the Pac-12 All-Academic First Team. It's the first such league academic honor in track and field for the redshirt freshmen, who each sport GPA's over 3.90. Both were also named to the conference's academic second team after the fall cross country season.
The Beavers placed four student-athletes on the Pac-12 All-Academic Track and Field Second Team in Kinsey Gomez, Lauren Graebner, Taylor Hunt and Aly Nielson. Last week, Gomez was selected to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), who annually recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Graebner was a Pac-10 All-Academic Second Team selection for track and field in 2011 and was also a Pac-12 Women's Cross Country Honorable Mention All-Academic pick this fall. Hunt has twice been honored at the conclusion of the track and field season for her academic work and was named to the second team last year and the first team in 2011. She was also Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention in cross country in 2012. It's the first league academic award for Nielson.
To be eligible for selection, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average, at least one year of enrollment at the institution and be either a starter or significant contributor. True freshmen are not eligible for Pac-12 All-Academic teams.
Justine Bird, Mary Claire Brenner, Emily LaValley, Lacey London, Chelsa McDonnell, Taylor Nowlin, Kristin Oenning, Whitney Pitman, Hilary Sharpe and Emily Wheeler were named Pac-12 Women's Track and Field Honorable Mention All-Academic.
LaValley, London, Nowlin, Oenning, Pitman and Sharpe and Wheeler have previously received multiple academic honors in both cross country and track. Brenner also earned spots on Pac-10/12 All-Academic teams as a member of the Oregon State softball program in 2010 and 2012. This is the first award for Bird and McDonnell.
The impressive academic displays are nothing new for Oregon State. As a group, the cross country program has received Division I All-Academic recognition from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for nine straight years, while the track & field squad's streak is at eight. The 2013 USTFCCCA Division I All-Academic Track & Field Teams will be announced later this summer.
