Brandt Granted Medical Hardship; Eligible To Play 2013-14 Season

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State center Angus Brandt was officially granted a medical hardship for the 2012-13 season by the Pac-12 Faculty Athletics Representative Committee and will be eligible to play next season.
"It's great to have it be official now," Brandt said. "I'm excited to get back to playing and pick up where I left off. I feel very good about what this team can accomplish this upcoming season."
Brandt was injured in the fourth game this past season when he suffered an isolated tear of the ACL in his right knee that required surgery and forced him to miss the remainder of what was initially expected to be his senior campaign. He was averaging 11.3 points and 8.5 rebounds per game before sustaining the injury, which happened against Purdue in the 2K Sports Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Brandt was eligible for a medical hardship because he played in nine games or less during the first half of the season and suffered a season-ending injury.
"Our team, staff and I can't possibly state how much we missed Angus last season," Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson said. "His scoring, rebounding and particularly his leadership were gravely missed. Hearing his medical hardship has been granted officially gives us a chance to be extremely competitive next season. Angus is making great progress in his rehab and should be ready when the season starts."
The Sydney, Australia native has played 95 games, with 62 starts, in his career and led the team in three-point percentage in 2011-12 when he went 29-for-59 (.492) from beyond the arc. He recorded his first career double-double in the opening game of the 2K Sports Classic when he scored 10 points and pulled down a career-best 11 rebounds against Alabama. He scored a career-high 22 points against TCU in the CBI two seasons ago.
Brandt has earned Pac-12 All-Academic honors each of the past three seasons with honorable mention recognition the last two years after being named to the first team in 2010-11.
The Beavers will have a formidable frontline next season with Devon Collier, Eric Moreland and Brandt returning, plus Daniel Gomis, who missed the past two seasons with an injury, and 7-foot freshman Cheikh N'diaye. Practice for the 2013-14 season officially begins on Friday, Sept. 27.
Brandt's news comes a little more than a week before the grand opening for the OSU Basketball Center, which takes place at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11 with a program and ribbon cutting for the state-of-the-art practice facility.
