Lauren Graebner has witnessed a large amount of change as a member of the Oregon State track and field and cross country programs during her four years. The most tangible evidence of that development came in March, when the Beavers hosted their first meet in Corvallis in 25 years at the team's new "home", the Whyte Track and Field Center.
Welcoming visitors, family, friends and fans to that facility was, as Graebner described, "a great feeling" and the senior captain has done her fair share to emulate that same welcoming spirit off the track. An apparel design major, Graebner's Unity Scarf, borne from a project in her cross-cultural aspects of the near environment class her sophomore year, has done exactly that.
The product designed, a sort of haute couture hijab, has meshed clothes and culture and is aimed at meeting the needs of someone acculturating into the United States. The Unity Scarf, which is provisionally patent pending, is a new version of that worn my millions of Muslim women around the world that also appeals to women generally.
In her quest to eventually design functional apparel for the athlete to improve performance, Graebner will start work the Monday after graduation at SKORA, a minimalist shoe company in Portland that focuses on a "Run Real" design philosophy.
