Open 4+ Races to Grand Final, Two Others Move On

LAKE NATOMA, Calif. – Racing at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships continued Saturday with three Oregon State boats racing some of the strongest crews in the nation. OSU’s Open 4+ led the way qualifying to Sunday’s Grand Final while the Varsity Eight and Varsity 4+ advanced to the Third Level Finals.
The O4+ was third off the line but dropped back to fifth in the second half of the race. From that point, the Beavers cranked out an amazing spring passing Syracuse and Pennsylvania to grab the final qualifying spot of the Grand Final.
In the C/D semifinal, the OSU V4+ put together a strong piece. The Beavers got out to the lead early ahead of MIT and Princeton, before falling back into third in the middle of the race. As the finish line got closer, the Beavers held off George Washington to take the qualifying spot for the third level final.
Needing to a top three finish to move on to the Third Level Final, the Beavers’ V8 got the job done racing strong crews from Penn and Georgetown and held off a fast charging Dartmouth crew.
Both the V8 and V4+ will race for the chance to finish as high as 13th in the nation on Sunday. OSU’s Junior Varsity Eight moved directly to the Third Level Final after racing on Friday.
