French Advances To Match Play At U.S. Amateur Public Links

NORMAN, Okla. - Former Oregon State golfer Whitney French finished in a tie for 17th place in stroke play competition and advanced to match play at the prestigious U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship on Friday.
French shot a 4-over 76 at the par-72, 6,351-yard Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club on Thursday and followed that up with a solid 1-under 71 on Friday to make the 64-person match-play field with a 3-over 147. French will face Hannah Sodersten, a rising sophomore at Fresno State University, in the opening round.
The single-elimination match play competition consists of six rounds with the 36-hole championship scheduled to conclude on Saturday. Live scoring is available at this link.
The U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
French played for the Beavers from 2008 to 2012 and finished her career third all-time in scoring average at 76.95. She played in every tournament in her four-year career with 129 total rounds, the second-most in Oregon State history. She was named to the Pac-12 All-Academic Second Team after sophomore, junior and senior seasons, and was selected to the 2009-10 and 2011-12 National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team, which has criteria that is some of the most stringent in all of college athletics
Current Oregon State golfers also had a successful week, as Seshia Telles Ashlee Pickerell and Melissa Gibbons all advanced through stroke-play competition at the 104th Oregon Women's Amateur Championship to reach 32-player match play field.
Telles led the Beavers' trio with a fifth-place finish at the par-72, 6,185-yard Eugene Country Club. She will face Kelsey Whiles in the opening round, while Pickerell will go against Morgan Thompson and Gibbons will battle Gigi Stoll.
