Former Beaver Morten Madsen Makes Cut At U.S. Open

June 15, 2013
ARDMORE, Pa. - Morten Madsen became just the second Oregon State golfer to make the cut in one of golf's four major championships after shooting a pair of 74's in the first two rounds at the 113th U.S. Open Championship.
Madsen was one of 73 players to make the cut and joins Anthony Kang (2001 U.S. Open) as Oregon State golfers to advance to the weekend in a major. Madsen is believed to be just the fifth Beaver to play in the U.S. Open, joining a list that includes Scott Masingill (1981), Kang (2001), Anthony Arvidson (2003) and Nick Sherwood (2012).
The cut included all golfers in the top 60, including ties, and anyone within 10 strokes of the lead
Madsen had two birdies and six bogeys in the first round on Thursday and followed that with one birdie and five bogeys in Friday's second round at the challenging par-70, 6,996-yard Merion Golf Club to put him in a tie for 66th with an 8-over 148. He will be paired with Steven Alker and Alistair Presnell in the third round on Saturday.
Only two players -- Phil Mickelson and Billy Horschel -- were under par through 36 holes, proving once again that the U.S. Open is the toughest test in golf.
A native of Silkeborg, Denmark, Madsen is enjoying great success in his first year on the European Tour, including a tie for second place at the Madeira Islands Open, a week before he qualified for the U.S. Open. He qualified for the British Open in July 2012 but missed the cut.
Madsen, who enjoyed a successful career with the Beavers before leaving after the fall of his senior season to play professionally, is sixth on Oregon State's career scoring average list with a 72.49 and ninth on the Beavers' single-season scoring average list after posting a 72.41 in 2008-09.
