CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State's Kinsey Gomez was selected to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.
The academic all-district track & field/cross country teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. The teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada with District Eight encompassing Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawai'i, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Canada.
Gomez, one of just five underclassmen among the 26 honored in District Eight, is the first OSU track and field/cross country student-athlete to receive the distinction since Marsha Lampi in 2011. The sophomore distance runner from Coeur d' Alene, Idaho has a 3.90 GPA as a Pre-Business major.
She recently completed her season in the 5,000 at the NCAA West Regional Preliminaries in Austin, Texas. Gomez earned the trip to Austin when she moved into second on Oregon State's all-time list in the 5K at Mt. SAC, cutting 14 seconds off her previous best to finish 10th in the event's `A' section with a time of 16:24.17. That mark is now shy of only former OSU All-American Laura Carlyle, who ran 16:05.04 at the NCAA West Regional in 2011.
Additionally, Gomez's 1,500 time of 4:26.89 at the inaugural OSU High Performance Meet on April 26 is third on the program's all-time list and her indoor 3,000 time of 9:37.79 at the UW Final Qualifier on March 1 is second on the Beavers' all-time list in that event.
Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America teams programs since 2011, which were previously sponsored by ESPN the Magazine.
