Softball Rundown: The Civil War
May 3, 2013
This Weekend: Oregon State travels to Eugene to face the No. 5 Oregon Ducks in the Civil War, presented by PacificSource Health Plans, the NW Ford Dealers, McDonald’s and Wells Fargo. The Beavers are riding a six-game win streak, their longest since a six-gamer in early March. Friday’s game begins at 4:00 p.m., Saturday’s at noon, and Sunday’s at 1:00 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks.

Last Time Out: The Beavers secured their first-ever sweep over Arizona last weekend, winning the three-game home series by scores of 2-1 each day. Each of the three games ended with plays at the plate. On Friday, Arizona was cut down at the plate attempting to tie the score. Saturday, Lea Cavestany broke a tie score with an infield single. On Sunday, Cavestany again delivered with a two-out, two-run single to give the Beavers the victory.
Weekend Television Information: All three games this weekend are being aired on the Pac-12 Networks. Jim Watson will provide play-by-play and Ann Schatz will do the color commentary.
Streakin’ Beavs: Oregon State has won six consecutive games, including the school’s first ever sweep of Arizona last weekend. The OSU pitching has been spectacular in those six games, sporting a 0.81 ERA and a .201 opponents’ batting average. In the six games, senior Tina Andreana is 4-0 with a 0.72 ERA. Fellow senior Marina Demore is 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA.
Andreana Earns Pitcher of the Week: Senior pitcher Tina Andreana won her first Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week award earlier this week for her performance against Arizona. Andreana made two starts in Oregon State’s series sweep of the Wildcats, pitching 15 innings and striking out 10 hitters. On Friday, Andreana carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning while pitching a shutout through seven innings on Sunday. For the weekend, she posted a 0.93 ERA as she allowed just two runs in those 15 innings of work.
Double Digit Home Run Hitters: Senior Cambria Miranda had 11 and Brianne McGowan had 10.
Climbing the Charts: Freshman first baseman Brianne McGowan in 2007. Hampton also has 13 home runs, tied for 4th on the all-time list. The school record is 16. Lea Cavestany is now ninth on the RBIs list with 42, surpassing Elizabeth Santana’s 41 from last season.
Team Home Run Total: Cavestany’s homer Tuesday means the Beavers have hit 48 home runs as a team this season, tying for number five in school history. The 2004 team also hit 48. The school record of 61 home runs was set by the 2003 team.
Demore Wins 19th: Senior pitcher Brianne McGowan in 2005.
Sweeping the Wildcats: The Beavers did something they never had in school history last weekend, sweeping a series from the Arizona Wildcats. The Beavers did so by winning each game, 2-1. On Sunday, OSU won in extra innings after a scoreless regulation game. Arizona scored one in the top half of the eighth, but the Beavers came back with two in the bottom half.
Around the Horn: The Beavers have played 49 games so far this season and have used the same infield alignment in every game at first, second, third and shortstop. Respectively, freshman Natalie Hampton, sophomore Ya Garcia, and seniors Desiree Beltran and Elizabeth Santana have been on head coach Laura Berg’s lineup card in each game of the 2013 season.
Shut Down: The Beavers have won plenty of games thanks to their pitching, and that is evident in this statistic. OSU is a perfect 21-0 in games allowing two runs or less. To show how good the offense has been, Oregon State is 31-7 in games where it allows five runs or less.
