Beavers will bring five boats to the 27th annual event on the Montlake Cut, which marks the official opening of boating season in Seattle
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State men’s rowing team will take the four hour long trek North along Interstate 5 this Saturday to take part in Seattle’s annual Windermere Cup, hosted by the University of Washington. The Beavers will bring a total of five boats up to the Emerald City, including the JV 8+, Freshmen 8+, Varsity 4+ ‘A’ and ‘B’ as well as the Open 8+.
“Our Second 8 will have a quite a race against some Ivy League teams that we do not typically get to race during the regular season,” said OSU Head Coach Steve Todd. “It’s a great opportunity for the young guys on our team to race Washington, Cornell and Dartmouth in an exciting environment.”
Todd and Novice Coach Gabe Winkler’s Freshmen 8+ boat will take on Washington’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ as well as the University of Victoria for the second time this season. Washington State will also be in the race along with the three other schools.
The Open 8+ boat will also go against WSU and Washington as well as the University of British Columbia and the Pocock Rowing Center.
The Beavers’ two Varsity 4+ boats, ‘A’ and ‘B’ will match-up with the Huskies’ same boats in that event and as Coach Todd mentioned, the JV8+ will compete against UW, Cornell and Dartmouth in the prestigious Erickson Cascade Cup.
“Windermere and Seattle Yacht Club make this race a very special event,” Todd added. “It’s unlike anything else around; a great atmosphere and terrific racing.”
Now in its 27th year, the Windermere Cup is sponsored by Windermere Real Estate and the Seattle Yacht Club, and marks the official opening of boating season in Seattle.
Last season OSU brought a total of four boats to Windermere and like in 2012, this event will act as Oregon State’s final regular season tune-up before the Pac-12 Championships.
