Nine Rowers Named CRCA National Scholar-Athletes

Nine Oregon State rowers and coxswains were named 2013 CRCA National Scholar-Athletes, the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced recently.
Alissa Kummer (Oakdale, Calif./Oakdale HS), Karly Laney (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis HS), Beth Lewis (Carson City, Nev./Carson HS), Katie Low (Bend, Ore./Summit HS), Laura McNeill (Edmonton, Alberta/Jasper Place Composite), Ashley Molholm (Victoria, B.C./Stelly’s Secondary), Alexa Ortiz (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview HS), Hilary Polis (Redmond, Wash./Redmond HS) and Julie Stark (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage HS) received the honors.
This is the third straight year Ortiz, a senior who carries a grade-point average of 3.92 in zoology, and Polis, a senior with a 3.91 in environmental economics, policy and management, have earned the award. Lewis, a senior with a 3.80 in Spanish, received the award for the second year in a row.
It is the first such award for the rest of the group including: Kummer, a sophomore with a 3.97 GPA in nutrition; Laney, a senior with a 3.56 in exercise and sport science; Low, a sophomore with a 4.0 in zoology; McNeill, a sophomore with a 3.97 in exercise and sport science; Molholm, a junior with a 3.73 in management; and Stark, a sophomore with a 3.68 in public health.
REQUIREMENTS
- The student-athlete has met all eligibility rules as defined by her institution
- The student-athlete was in her 2nd, 3rd of 4th year of eligibility
- The student-athlete rowed in her institution’s NCAA or IRA eligible boat(s) for a minimum of 75% of the current spring races or racing in a regional conference event.
- The head coach of the student-athletes institution was a member in good standing of the CRCA as of May 1, 2013.
CRITERIA
- The student-athlete has had a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher for her career (through the fall semester/quarter for the current competition year).
