Beavers In The Postseason
Oregon State has advanced to the 2013 postseason and will be hosting the Corvallis Regional. The regional features No. 2 Texas A&M, No. 3 UC Santa Barbara and No. 4 UT-San Antonio.
Postseason History
Oregon State is making its 14th visit to the postseason since the program’s first season in 1907. The Beavers carry a 40-26 (.606) postseason record into the regional, with the current head coach, Pat Casey, claiming 35 of those victories. Oregon State’s visit is the team’s fifth consecutive, which extends the program’s record stretch. The Beavers are 23-16 in NCAA Regional games (.590), including a 9-0 mark at Goss Stadium. OSU is 18-7 (.720) in NCAA Regional games since the NCAA adopted the current postseason format.
Against The Corvallis Regional Field
Against the teams in the regional, the Beavers have the most history with UC Santa Barbara. OSU is 15-10-1 lifetime against the Gauchos. The teams last met in 2012 when the Beavers won 3-of-4 in Santa Barbara. Oregon State is 4-4 against Texas A&M, defeating the Aggies twice during the 2009 Fort Worth Regional. OSU has only met UTSA once, in 2011 in San Antonio, where the Beavers prevailed, 10-7.
National Seed
Oregon State has been named the SSS national seed in this season’s tournament. It’s the second time the Beavers have been named a national seed. The 2005 club was the No. 8 seed.
From Last Year
Oregon State has 19 players on the 2013 roster who competed at the 2012 Baton Rouge Regional. The Beavers went 2-2 at the regional, defeating Belmont and Louisiana-Monroe but falling twice to host LSU. Michael Conforto batted .429 (6-for-14) during the regional to lead Oregon State, while Ryan Barnes was 6-for-17 (.353). Ben Wetzler and Tony Bryant earned the club’s two wins.
Corvallis Regional History
Oregon State is hosting an NCAA Regional for the fourth time in school history since the curent postseason format was adopted in 1999. The Beavers are a perfect 9-0 in NCAA Regionals at Goss Stadium, most recently sweeping UALR, Creighton and Georgia in 2011. Only three Corvallis Regional games have seen the Beavers win by two runs or less: 4-3 over Ohio State in 2005, 5-3 against Wright State in 2006 and 6-4 over Georgia in 2011. OSU set a program postseason record for runs scored in a 19-3 win over St. John’s to advance to the 2005 Corvallis Super Regional.
In Non-Conference Action
Every game played by the Beavers throughout the postseason are non-conference contests, even if Oregon State takes on a non-conference foe. OSU finished the regular season with a 21-4 record in non-conference games, including a 9-2 mark at home. The Beavers hit .294 as a team in non-conference games, with Tyler Smith pacing the club at .367. Opponents hit just .205 as the team’s pitching staff recorded a 1.97 earned run average.
At Home
Oregon State defended its home turf well during the 2013 season, going 22-4 at Goss Stadium. The Beavers .288 at home while opponents batted just .210. OSU was led offensively by Dylan Davis, who batted .364 with three home runs and 29 runs batted in. The OSU staff finished the regular season with a 2.13 earned run average. Starter Andrew Moore was 6-1 with a 1.22 ERA at Goss Stadium. Matt Boyd was 5-0 with a 1.35 ERA.
Great Crowds At Home
Oregon State truly uses its home field advantage, as evidenced in the note above, and a large part of that success has been due to the fans who cheer the team on. OSU averaged 2,485 fans per home game in the regular season, which if the season had ended prior to the postseason, would have set the single-season record by 200. The 2,485 figure represents 76.5 percent of stadium capacity during the regular season. OSU has added a little shy of 400 seats for the regional. These can be found in left field.
Get Out Early
A large part of the Beavers’ success this season has hinged on Oregon State’s ability to get ahead of teams early. The Beavers have outscored their opponents, 50-15, in the first inning of games this season. They’ve also outscored them 28-17 in the second and 35-19 in the third.
A Look At The Starters
Oregon State’s starters recorded 25 quality starts in 30 outings during the Pac-12 Conference portion of the season. That played a large part in the starting staff going 33-6 overall. The starters racked up a 2.06 earned run average in 327 1/3 innings. They struck out 247 to just 84 walks, a 2.94-to-1 ratio.
