CORVALLIS, Ore. - With one week to go until the Pac-12 Championships, the Oregon State track and field program will split entries between a pair of twilight meets this weekend. A large Beaver contingent will head to Hayward Field for the third time this season to compete in the Oregon Twilight on Friday, while another group will be at the Pacific Twilight in Forest Grove on Friday and Saturday.
The Oregon Twilight will be streamed live for free at the Ducks' Pac-12 portal with live results available at goducks.com. Live results from the Pacific Twilight can be found at this link.
The majority of Oregon State's field event athletes will look to remain in a groove as the postseason approaches. As has been the case for the majority of the season, Mary Claire Brenner will throw the discus (5:40 p.m.) and shot put (7:25 p.m.) in Eugene, while her teammate Kayla Fleskes will be in the discus and javelin (6:55 p.m.).
In the jumps, Sara Almen, Lucinda Howard and Kristin Oenning will lead things off for OSU in the high jump at 4:10 p.m. Kaitlyn Mason is entered in the long jump at 4:30 p.m. and school-record holder Michele Turney will go in the triple jump at 6:10 p.m.
"For some in the field events you don't want them to lose their rhythm," Oregon State assistant coach Travis Floeck said. "To go two weeks without competing in those events isn't necessarily always the best thing so for a lot of our field event athletes it made sense to compete this weekend and they'll still be well-rested when they compete at conference next week."
Almen will be competing for the second time this outdoor season. During the indoor campaign she cleared 5' 11¼" in at the UW Final Qualifier on March 2, which tied for 19th in the country and was the third-best for any freshman. It is also the fourth-best indoor high jump mark in Oregon State history and the second-best in the Pac-12 this year, regardless of season (indoor or outdoor), behind only Arizona's Brigetta Barrett (6' 4¾"), the 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the high jump.
Last week at the OSU High Performance Meet Kristin Oenning PR'd in the high jump, topping her previous best in the event by two inches, clearing 5' 6½" to finish third. Her previous best was 5' 4½" from 2012's Oregon Relays.
On March 23, Turney posted a school-record leap of 39' ¼ " in the triple jump, the top mark for a Pac-12 freshman in 2013.
On the track at Hayward Field, freshman Morgan Anderson will race unattached in the `A' section of the women's 1,500 at 7:50 p.m., followed by Sandra Martinez in the 3,000 at 8:05 p.m. and Emily LaValley and Lacey London in the `A' section of the 800 to wrap up the evening's events at 8:30 p.m.
At last Friday's OSU High Performance Meet, Anderson ran the Beavers' second-fastest 800 of the season (2:15.35). The freshman has run two 1,500's already in 2013, with her best time coming at the Oregon Relays on April 19 when she finished in 4:39.35. This will be LaValley's third 800 of the year, and first away from the Whyte Track and Field Center, while London is coming off a time of 2:15.84 in her effort at the distance last Friday.
Earlier in the day, Lauren Graebner, Haley Hunt (unattached), Ashley Mayfield and Maureen Tremblay will run the other section of the 1,500 at 5 p.m., followed by Carly Januzzi in the 800 at 5:20 p.m. and Taylor Hunt in the 400 at 5:30 p.m.
"The ones running races we decided on an individual basis," Floeck said of this weekend's entries. "Some people just need another effort before the conference meet, but we're also holding some out who need a weekend of rest."
At the Pacific Twilight in Forest Grove, Whitney Pitman and Hilary Sharpe are entered in Friday's steeple and Rylee Marshall will compete in the women's triple jump, with both events beginning at 4 p.m. On Saturday, Jessica Lautenbach and Justine Bird are in the high jump at 10 a.m., Julian Dansk will be in the men's discus at the same time and Ryan Cope will run the men's 400 hurdles at 1:30 p.m.
"We're racing some to see where they're at because entries aren't due for the conference meet until the middle of next week," Floeck added. "This is another opportunity to show they can compete at that level and earn a trip down to Southern California. We have a lot of events going on this weekend and some people know they are going to Pac-12's and are trying to hone themselves while others are really trying to prove themselves."
