Fink, Sherwood Go On Birdie Barrage At NCAA Regionals

May 17, 2013
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - David Fink and Nick Sherwood combined to card 13 birdies en route to a pair of 3-under 69's in the second round of the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Tallahassee Regional on Friday and lift Oregon State two spots into eighth place with 18 holes remaining.
The Beavers knocked seven strokes off their opening round with a 3-under 285 at the par-72, 6,965-yard Golden Eagle Golf and Country Club and moved from 10th place to eighth with a 1-over 292-285--577. They sit 11 strokes out of the top five spots, which earns a ticket to the NCAA Championships in Atlanta, Ga., later this month.
The final round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, and Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn knows the Beavers need an epic score in hopes of continuing the season for seniors Nick Chianello, Matt Rawitzer and Sherwood.
"I'll probably shed a tear or two tomorrow if it is the last day," Reehoorn said. "I've really enjoyed coaching these three guys. Not only have they meant a lot on the course to our program, but they have each always represented Oregon State off the course and in the classroom to the best of their abilities. My hope for tomorrow is that they just relax, enjoy the round and post some red numbers and who knows what can happen."

Fink, a junior from Kailua, Hawai'i, has progressed into the Beavers' most consistent golfer, as he has fired two rounds in red figures at regionals to put him in a tie for 13th place with a 5-under 70-69--139. He had seven birdies in Friday's second round, after carding six on the opening day, but took a triple-bogey and a bogey that kept him from posting a career-best score.
The All-Pac-12 Second Team golfer started on the 10th hole on Friday and was 2-under through five before slipups on No. 15 and No. 16 that put him at 2-over. He birdied the par-5 18th for the second straight day and added birds on the par-4 first, par-4 second, par-4 fifth and par-5 ninth holes, to go with five pars for a bogey-free back side and a 3-under 69 round.
"Dave has always possessed the ability to be really good," Reehoorn said. "He has progressed really well this year mostly because mentally he is much stronger and simply believes he can compete with anyone. On the golf course he is driving the ball so much better, which is allowing him to have more birdie opportunities and avoid the big numbers."
Sherwood, who qualified for the U.S. Open a little less than a year ago, started on fire with birdies on five of his first six holes. He took a bogey on the par-3 17th hole, but responded with a chirp on the par-5 18th to shoot a ridiculous 5-under 31 going out.
The senior was unable to card a birdie over his final nine holes, but still shot a 3-under 69, which was far better than the 5-over 77 he opened with, and help him make a huge leap up the leaderboard from a tie for 66th place into a tie for 39th.
Nick Sherwood led us off and from the start it looked like he was on a mission," Reehoorn said. "It was fun to see and hopefully he can continue it tomorrow. He spent time working on his putting last night, made a couple in his approach on the greens and then just went and played golf."
Chianello and redshirt freshman>Brian Jung both played better on Friday after opening the regionals with a 4-over 76, as Chianello shot a 1-over 73 with three birdies and four bogeys and Jung finished with a 2-over 74 that included three birdies and five bogeys.
Rawitzer was the lone Oregon State golfer unable to shoot a better score on Friday, but he is second on the team on the individual leaderboard with an even-par 70-74--144 for a tie for 34th place. After opening with a team-tying best score of 2-under 70, Rawitzer had two birdies and four bogeys on the second day.
The top-five teams at the Tallahassee Regional advance to the NCAA Championships May 28-June 2 in Atlanta and right now there are seven teams fighting for those spots with Oregon State on the outside looking in. North Florida (27-under 549), Washington (25-under 551) and Florida State (23-under 553) look to be locks, while Oregon (14-under 562), Georgia Tech (12-under 564), South Florida (12-under 564) and Oklahoma (11-under 565) are all ahead of the Beavers heading into the final round.
MJ Maguire of North Florida holds the clubhouse lead for the second straight day with an 11-under 133, while Cheng-Tsung Pan of Washington and Chase Seiffert of Florida State are both a stroke back with a 10-under 134.
The Beavers will begin Saturday's final round at 7:30 a.m. ET (4:30 a.m. PT) off the 10th hole and be paired with Oklahoma and Wake Forest. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
