Fink, Rawitzer Each Card 70 To Lead Beavers On Day One At Regionals

May 16, 2013
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - David Fink and Matt Rawitzer each fired a 2-under 70 in the opening round of the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Tallahassee Regional on Thursday to help Oregon State sit in 10th place with 36 holes to play at the three-day event.
The Beavers were unable to get anyone else in red figures and finished the first round of the 54-hole tournament with a 4-over 292 at the par-72, 6,965-yard Golden Eagle Golf and Country Club. North Florida holds the clubhouse lead with a 16-under 272, while Washington is second (12-under 276) and Florida State is third (11-under 277).
The top five teams at the Tallahassee Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships in Atlanta, Ga., where they will join 25 other squads competing for the prestigious NCAA Championship trophy from May 28 to June 2.
Oregon State was in a similar position last year after its first round at regionals but responded with an 11-under score on the second day to move up the leaderboard. Head coach Jon Reehoorn knows the Beavers will need another solid round like that, and possibly two of them, to finish in the coveted top-5 positions.

"We dug ourselves a bit of a hole today," Reehoorn said. "In order to get ourselves back in this tournament with a chance to advance, we are going to need two very good rounds. I'm not sure it will take something special for both rounds, but it is going to need to be very good. A round like we had last year at Regionals would definitely go a long ways to at least give us a fighting chance."
While Fink and Rawitzer matched each other with a 2-under 70 to put them in a tie for 20th place on the individual leaderboard, they went about it in different fashion.
Fink had three bogies and two birdies on the front nine to shoot a 1-over 37 going out, but shot a bogey-free back side with three birdies for a 3-under 33 coming in. The junior, who was recently selected to the All-Pac-12 Second Team, got his birds on the par-4 fifth, par-4 eighth, par-4 13th, par-5 15th and par-5 18th holes.
Rawitzer had only one bad hole on the day, an unfortunate double-bogey on the par-4 16th hole, but added four birdies and 13 pars to shoot his first sub-par round since a 2-under 70 at the Fresno State Lexus Classic back in early March.
"Matt has shown he has the ability to show up when we really need him," Reehoorn said. "He did the same thing at Regionals last year. But in order for us to have a chance to make it to the NCAA Championships, we are going to need similar rounds from all five guys each of the next two days."
Senior Nick Chianello and redshirt freshman Brian Jung both shot a 4-over 76, and Senior Nick Sherwood finished with a 5-over 77. The three players combined to shoot 30 rounds in red figures this season and should bounce back over the next two days.
"Unfortunately, we didn't do ourselves many favors in the last few holes," Reehoorn said. "While we were not playing great to start the round, we still had the chance to finish well with two reachable par 5's to finish, but did not take advantage. We were in good position for the most part and simply just did not execute the shots when we needed."
MJ Maguire of North Florida shot a 7-under 65 to lead Anders Albertson of Georgia Tech and Chase Seiffert of Florida State by a stroke for medalist honors.
The Beavers will begin Friday's second round at 8:50 a.m. ET (5:50 a.m. PT) off the 10th hole and be paired with Iowa and San Diego. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
