TEMPE, Ariz. - Nick Chianello shot a 3-under 68 in the second round of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational on Saturday to give him a two-stroke lead and help the Oregon State men's golf team move into a tie for second place with the final 18 holes scheduled for Sunday.
Chianello tops the individual leaderboard with a 10-under 64-68--132 for a two-stroke advantage over Scott Fernandez of Iowa State (8-under 69-65--134) and three up on Brandon Hagy of California (7-under 70-65--135). Chianello will enter Sunday's final round looking to become the first Oregon State golfer to win a tournament outright since Diego Velasquez in October 2009.
As a team, Oregon State shot a 4-under 280 at the par-71, 7,026-yard ASU Karsten Golf Course on Saturday to move up two spots into a tie for second with a 4-under 564. New Mexico leads the three-day, 54-hole tournament through 36 holes with a 6-under 276-286--562 and San Diego is tied with the Beavers for second with a 4-under 289-275--564. No. 1 California and UNLV are tied for fourth with a 2-under 566.

"The guys played very well today," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "This is what they have been working so hard for; to have the opportunity to be in position to win another golf tournament. There is a good chance we end up back here in five weeks in a similar position - at Regionals to advance to the NCAA Championships.
"Tomorrow is an opportunity to not only continue to build momentum as we head to the postseason, but act as a dress rehearsal for what might be in front of us in five weeks. The best part is that I know we have a little better in us. We just need to be in total control of ourselves and play the course."
Oregon State has one team title already this season after winning the Mark Simpson Invitational in Erie, Colo., back in September. The Beavers won two team titles a year ago, the Pacific Invitational and Fresno State Lexus Classic, their most in a season since 2007.
Chianello had six birdies and three bogeys on Saturday after opening the tournament with an Oregon State personal best 7-under 64 on Friday. His best career finish is a tie for fifth place at three different events, most recently the Fresno State Lexus Classic this past March.
Junior David Fink made the biggest jump in the second round, posting a 3-under 68 after starting with a 3-over 74, which moved him 34 spots up the leaderboard to a tie for 17th place. The lefty had five birdies on Saturday, including four in a row between the seventh and 10th holes, with just two bogeys.
Senior Nick Sherwood has been steady both days of the tournament to put him in a tie for 13th place with a 1-under 71-70--141. He had four birdies on Saturday, after carding three on Friday, and is just one stroke short of moving into the top 10.
Sophomore Scott Kim and senior Matt Rawitzer are both tied for 68th place with an 8-over 150, as Kim has rounds of 76 and 74 and Rawitzer has posted a pair of 75's.
The final round begins at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday with tee times off the first and 10th holes. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
