Chianello Leads ASU Thunderbird Invite After Firing 7-Under 64

TEMPE, Ariz. - Nick Chianello fired a 7-under 64 in the first round of the 41st Annual ASU Thunderbird Invitational on Friday to give him the clubhouse lead and lift the Oregon State men's golf team to a tie for fourth place with 36 holes to play.
Oregon State finished the opening round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament with an even-par 284 at the par-71, 7,026-yard ASU Karsten Golf Course and only three strokes out of second place. New Mexico holds a five-stroke advantage after opening with an 8-under 276, while San Diego State is second with a 3-under 281, UNLV is third after a 1-under 283 and No. 1-ranked California is tied with the Beavers for fourth.
"I think we are becoming the team I envisioned at the beginning of the year," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "The guys are having a lot of fun together and working hard on every shot to make sure they don't let down their teammates. When that happens, good things follow. We've got a ways to go in this event still, so we need to just make sure we keep treating every shot the same."
Chianello bogeyed his first hole of the day, the par-4 first, but didn't have another square on his card the rest of the round, as he carded six birdies and an eagle to put him in first place and two strokes ahead of Tom Berry of San Diego State and Victor Perez of New Mexico, who each shot a 5-under 66.

The senior from Gresham, Ore., got his eagle on the par-5 14th hole and his birdies on the par-4 fourth, par-4 ninth, par-5 10th, par-3 12th, par-4 13th and par-5 17th. Chianello has now shot 10 sub-par rounds in his senior campaign and looks to improve on his best finish this season, a tie for fifth at the Fresno State Lexus Classic.
The 7-under 64 is an Oregon State career best by Chianello to better the 6-under 66 he shot at the Fresno State Lexus Classic in early March. His best-ever round as a collegian was an 8-under 64 at the Palouse Cougar Collegiate as a sophomore at the University of Portland.
"Nick has the ability to make birdies in bunches and today was one of those days," Reehoorn said. "He has worked hard to make his putting better, and it is fun to see him be rewarded."
Senior Nick Sherwood shot a 1-under 36 on the back nine that included a birdie and eight pars to help him finish with an even-par 71 for a tie for 16th place. Junior David Fink was 4-over through 12 holes before finishing the day with two birdies and a bogey to give him a 3-over 74 and in a tie for 51st.
Senior Matt Rawitzer sits in a tie for 60th after opening with a 4-over 75 for the Beavers' final score in the first round, while sophomore Scott Kim was a stroke back with a 5-over 76 to put him in a tie for 69th place.
The second round begins at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday with tee times off the first and 10th holes. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
