LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Nick Sherwood led the Oregon State men's golf team with a 2-over 72 in the third round of the 2013 Pac-12 Championship on Tuesday, but the Beavers slipped a spot into a tie for seventh place through 54 holes at the three-day, 72-hole event.
The Los Angeles Country Club played much tougher on Tuesday than the 36-hole opening day, as Oregon State shot a 30-over 380 on the par-70, 7,236-yard layout to fall from a tie for sixth place into a tie for seventh with Colorado and USC with a 60-over 1,110. The Beavers can still make up a lot of ground in Wednesday's final round with the tournament's six-count-format.
No. 1 California, which won the conference crown last season, backed up on Tuesday but was able to keep a slim lead with a 6-over 1,056, just ahead of UCLA at 8-over 1,058. Washington (28-over 1,078), Arizona State (34-over 1,084) and Stanford (42-over 1,092) round out the top five.
Sherwood, a senior from Albany, Ore., shot a 1-over 36 with eight pars and a bogey going out and had birdies on the par-4 10th and par-3 15th holes, to go with three bogeys coming in, for his 2-over round. He moved up from a tie for 34th place after the first day to sole 26th with a 9-over 73-74-72--219.

Senior Nick Chianello carded a nine on the par-5 opening hole on Tuesday, but battled back with three birdies on the back side, before closing with a double to finish with an 11-over 81. The Beavers will begin Wednesday's final round at 8 a.m. off the 10th hole and be paired with Colorado and USC. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
