Tyler Smith, Scott Schultz Earn Midseason Recognition

April 23, 2013
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State senior Tyler Smith has been named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List and junior Scott Schultz has been placed on the midseason Stopper of the Year Watch list, which were both announced on Tuesday.
The Brooks Wallace Award is given annually to the nation's top collegiate shortstop and is sponsored by the College Baseball Hall of Fame. The Stopper of the Year Award, meanwhile, is given to the top collegiate closer.
Smith is very well deserving of being on the watch list. A senior, he is batting .313 with three doubles, two triples, one home run and 17 runs batted in. He has been a part of 22 double plays for the Beavers, who lead the Pac-12 Conference with 42 this season.
The Beavers are 24-3 this season when he starts at short.
Schultz, meanwhile, has been supremely effective out of the bullpen this season and is 2-1 with a 1.15 earned run average and eight saves in 16 appearances. He is coming off a 7 1/3 inning outing at Seattle where he picked up the win after striking out three and allowing the Redhawks just two hits and one hit by pitch.
His eight saves are fourth in the Pac-12. Five of the eight have come in conference games, which is good for second in the league.
The Beavers open a three-game series against USC Friday at 4:05 p.m. PT. Note, this is a new time that was announced two weeks back to enable fans to better enjoy the Spring Showcase on the Oregon State campus. The OSU football team's spring game will start at 7 p.m. that night.
The game can be heard on the Beaver Sports Network with the following stations carrying the game: KEJO 1240-AM in Corvallis/Albany, FOX Sports Radio Portland (620-AM), KICE 940-AM (Bend) and KSKR 1490-AM in Roseburg.
